My D auditioned a couple of weeks ago. 97 for her Horn solo (down from last year's 99) so not good enough for Conference All State. 98 for her vocal ("Ave Maria") - high enough to be considered for Conference but probably won't get in since she is a Soprano and her teacher says 100's are quite plentiful within Sopranos. I guess we will see in the Fall.

How did you do?

Not that NYSSMA is not a great experience, because it is, and so is all-state, but if someone does not get into all-state, it has virtually no impact on their future. My first year, I had a 100, sat first chair in the band, then the next year I was surprised that I got a 98, and did not even get an alternate. Although, other kids on the same instrument had the same score and did get one. I still got into all three schools that I auditioned at, and not one of them cared about all-state. I hope everyone did well though, it is really impossible to put a number on music.

I got a 98 - Mezzo. I also agree that there are 100 sopranos who got 100s lol
The only luck i might get is if they need Mezzos because all of my friends sang mezzo and they all got low 90s, so i'm crossing my fingers. But, I agree with euphgal, it really doesn't affect anything. It's just fun for me personally.
Many people went down this year, actually. I don't know what it is.

My D auditioned in Watertown. Where did you audition? She had a pretty good time at Conference last year despite being sick with bronchitis the whole time. She says she was lucky to get in once (she is the first to get to all-state from her school in the last 10 years and one of only 2 total in our county this past year).

I don't know what your musical resumes are like but we live in a VERY rural area and my D has quite limited musical opportunities. Her All-State experience and NYSSMA scores will stick out on her apps because frankly there is not much else to report. We are fortunate that she is applying for Music Ed so that she has her academic record for consideration as well. I will keep my fingers crossed for you too Operasinger2000 as I will for my D. The thing she liked best about All State was "when I got there for once I wasn't the biggest music geek around. Everyone was just like me." Besides living in a very rural area our school covets sports way more than the arts or even education. Both my D's take a lot of flack for not being sporty. My youngest D has even been called lazy by her peers for not being in a sport even though she takes 9-11 hours a week of dance classes.

So don't undervalue the All State experience or the value of it on a college app. If there is not much else to go by then it is important to admissions. Yes, the audition is paramount but not everyone shares the same musical opportunities. We cannot even find an appropriate private teacher for my D in this area.

No one is undervaluing the all-state experience, it is a great musical opportunity, but most do not regard it as an accurate way to grasp a student's musical ability. A lot of politics play into who is accepted, and many other states do not approve of the selection process. For example, other states allow freshmen and sophomores in, but in New York, the system is based on seniority, I know some freshmen who are better than seniors who get in. All State is a great learning experience, but keep in mind that there are other musical opportunities out there that are just as good or better. I, for instance, found that I learned a lot more from being selected into the NYSBDA Honor Band, than I did in the All-State Band.
