a student I know of there turned down Juilliard (but was not accepted at USC) to go to Colburn -- loves the facilities and his teacher.

I spent a couple of days in downtown LA, at the location of Colburn (near the Disney Concert Hall, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, City Hall, and the Contemporary Art Museum, but not much else, apart from courthouses), and thought it was not the most appealing area for a student without a car, and even with one -- before signing on, it would be advisable to take a look.

There is an additional background article on Colburn in the Aug/Sept '07 issue of Strings, which just happens to be their annual music school directory issue, an invaluable resource.

I tried accessing the Colburn article through the magazines website, but it did not come up on a search.

If anyone else wants to try, the Strings homepage link is http://www.stringsmagazine.com/

For string players/parents while your there, there's a free issue link on the left column as well. We've been subscribers since son was in middle school, and found the mag a good source of info. I'd recommend it highly. The music directory issue alone is probably worth the price of the subscription if you're contemplating send a child into a collegiate level music progam.

My friend goes there for bass... He says it's awesome. It's like the Curtis of the West coast evidently.
