And the fun begins....:)

S just submitted application #1 last night; I took the pre-screening CD to the post office this morning.

Here we go....! Holding on for this roller coaster ride!

I was going to add some sort of cheerful "we're rooting for you from the sidelines" kind of message. But before I started typing, I realized that, wait a minute - both my music kids are already in college, but the ride is still in progress, with all sorts of bumps and turns and hills still showing up! So hang on tight, holler all you want, and try to keep your eyes open! Scary sometimes, but lots of fun sometimes, too.

PS Congrats for getting off the ground!

Good luck and I'm certainly interested in following your progress. I'm still on the kiddie rides at this point.

And the really fun part is, the ride continues even after they graduate from college!

-Allmusic-: Good luck. It's a long process, and the waiting will be the worst part (at least from our experience). May your options be many!

Best wishes for you and your son on this journey, Allmusic. I think your level of thoughtfulness, planning, and organization (along with your son's dedication and talent) will smooth out the ride considerably. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Don't worry, Omnipotent! We still have SO much to do (and uberbusy boy has not nearly enough time in his life to do ALL that needs to be done, but somehow, he will have to find the time!)!

Thanks for the wishes, everyone. Mom55, I will send you a PM one day soon.

Agreed about the waiting. Time will seem to run at varying rates for the next year. It feels like you have all you can do to keep up with the deadlines, auditions and missed work between now and February, then time grinds to a near standstill in March. Mail (both US Mail and email) becomes an obsession and you had best get out of the way when the phone rings. April passes quickly amid a flurry of important decisions but once the deposit check and acceptance card are in the mail, the end of the school year cannot come soon enough. Best wishes to you and your son.

What's your S final list of schools Allmusic? He is way ahead of me, I don't record my prescreening CD until early November! But I am not applying early anywhere... Good luck!

Allmusic, good luck to your son! After much soul searching, my D, orchestragirl, has decided not to pursue performance, so there's been a little scrambling around our house to rearrange the list a bit. Luckily, most of the schools she was interested in for music are also good matches academically and offer a good music environment even for non-majors, which is important because she definitely wants to continue playing/studying at some level.

This really IS a roller-coaster, isn't it? And it's only October!! Sending good wishes to all...

orchestramom, this is exactly S's situation. During the past year he's gone back and forth between BMus (Vocal Performance) and BA, Music major, and has recently been seeking more advice from professional musicians/teachers. A few advocate a B.Mus but most come down on the side of waiting for the conservatory experience for grad school for this particular instrument (male voice) and this particular young man and his interests. So we are still doing college searches at this late date but I'm pretty sure he's getting close to settling. As soon as I say that, something else will pop up, as it did this weekend--the possibility of a gap year, which adds another twist to the plot. The gap year is unformed at this point but may have the effect of removing some schools from his list--he is absolutely applying now, though, as we've heard that applying during a gap year is really tough. Unless he comes up with a new college! I agree it's a roller coaster ride, as allmusic said (and congrats to getting that disc out!).

Good luck to all who are applying. We have just started getting this all together too. One app is in (no CD required) and only 8 more to go! We have recording studio time in two weeks for a Nov 1 deadline. Yow. This will be close.

neumes: my non-music son took a gap year after getting acceptance from a great college--he had a wonderful experience, and had the school waiting for him at the end of the year. There's nothing wrong with taking that time off, and it is such a learning experience in itself. (My son spent time in Oxford and Ghana--but there is a lot to do here that's for sure!)

My D just got her first confirmation and schedule for an audition. None of her schools require CDs so it should be a fairly quick process.
