| S got an acceptance letter from Carnegie Mellon University School of Music for bassoon performance today. We are thrilled, but it is a very expensive school, so he would need a hefty scholarship. We'll see how things turn out. 
Now we are just waiting to hear from Indiana, which was his first audition in early February. | |

Can anyone tell me whats the relationship between the Music Dept Admissions and the University General Admission. If one is accepted in Music Dept, what are the chances for getting into the university? This is the first time and oh it is so nerve-racking. Cant wait for April 1 to get it over with. Then I guess I will begin worrying about the merit scholarships or lack thereof. | |

| The relationship between the academic acceptances and music vary from school to school.
Some schools only require that you gain acceptance into the music program. You are then automatically accepted into the university or college.
Some schools require acceptance academically FIRST, then they schedule your audition and if you meet the audition requirements you gain acceptance to the music program. When DS was applying to undergrad programs, UMich was that way. Don't know if that's still the case or not.
Some schools have their music audition and if they want you based on the audition, they can "lean" on the academic admissions folks to accept you IF you are in the ballpark for admissions to the university.
Some schools require that you meet the academic AND music requirements separately for admission to a university based music program. The music department has no say in whether the academic acceptance is awarded.
When we visited Carnegie Mellon, my recollection was that they were one of the schools that could and would "lean" on admissions if you were a top person on your instrument.
Hartt actually accepted my son academically prior to his audition, but he did the early quick application to the university. He also did their priority audition.
Re: Peabody...if your daughter applied only to the conservatory, she does not need to be accepted to Hopkins as well. However, if she is applying for a dual program, she needs acceptance to both Hopkins and Peabody and needs to meet the standards set forth separately by each. In other words...she could get accepted to one but not the other.
When DS inquired, he was told by some schools that the music students needed to meet the academic requirements of the university as well because some students might actually transfer OUT of the music program into other colleges within the university. These schools had a standard for all students that they felt they needed to hold. | |

| My D is also applying for violin performance. I think Northwestern and Univ. of Mich. determine whether you are academically eligible first before scheduling the audition. We were told by Blair at Vanderbilt that they audition first and if you're accepted by Blair they then forward the file to Undergraduate Admissions. They then determine whether the applicant is "admissible." They also noted that about 85% of those forwarded files are determined to be admissible as music school applicants tend to perform well academically. | |

| I have personal knowledge of the Peabody/JHU relationship. Peabody strongly discourages dual degrees and only accept about 2 to do both in any given year. You must be accepted by both institutions separately and then both must agree that you can do a dual. Very stringent test. Once in the program, it is unusually difficult because of (a) the distance between the two campuses and (b) the completely different scheduling system which makes you feel you need to be in two places at once. If you want a dual degree, I think almost anywhere else would be a better choice! | |

| Hey all. S got an acceptance letter to Ball State's School of Music (vocal music ed), so if someone could update the list, I'd appreciate it. He also got a music scholarship to Hendrix, but that is not really a music school so it probably doesn't count. Still waiting on Furman; letters to be mailed March 15. | |
