Audition Scheduled For Iu Jacobs School Of Music

We just found out today that my daughter will be auditioning in February for their Bachelor of Music in Voice program. The letters did not go out yet, however, they were very receptive when I e-mailed them asking when the letters would go out. They sent back and e-mail saying "congratulations" and let me know D was selected to audition. I think she is over the Cincinnati let down!

Congratulations! I am so glad for your daughter (and her parents). Hopefully, she will be pleased with her audition at IU (and elsewhere) and be able to know that she did her best no matter what the final outcome. I still have to remind S (and myself) that in each failed audition there are factors beyond his control - the superior quality of the other applicants (no matter how well prepared you are and how well you performed, you can always learn from your betters and it may be best to admit that there is something to be learned!), the adjudicators (they may be "correct", but yes, in any individual audition or competition "mistakes" can be & are made, you just hope that these average out over time), and those times that no matter how much you prepared for a good performance the fates just aligned to insure that you were over-tired, becoming ill, etc. I try to help S in understanding that it may be better to look on music training as a process rather than a series of discrete events. If he can take each disappointment as a way to learn and evaluate (did he overestimate his abilities, did he simply have a bad day, etc.) he stands a better chance of meeting his goals in the end. Best wishes to your daughter!

lol - with me, it's usually the other way 'round. S is much better at handling the ups and downs than I am.

Anyway, Linnlew, glad you're on an upside of the rollercoaster at the moment!

That is such great news. Even getting an audtition there is quite a feather in her cap. My D's piano teacher, who was quite the muckety muck in her day and can drop names like nobody else believes that IU is the best music program in the country now. I have no doubt it will be on my D's list for graduate school.

I don't remember, but they go by audition dates. If you are auditioning in February, you should know something soon. E-mail the school and they will let you know!

Congrats and good luck to your D.
MyD was not a vocal major but a flute performerance ,but I will say that Indiana was by far the best organized and friendliest audition day she had( that includes Oberlin,Peabody,U Maryland,Arizona State,Ithaca). We were impressed ,and although she wound up elsewhere she would have been happy there in the School of music.

My S got his audition confirmation for IU (2/2/08) this week (bassoon-no pre-screening tape). The information they sent seems incredibly well organized. It also came in time to actually get a good airfare from Utah. We are staying at the conference center on campus, which seems about as close as you can get.
Good luck to all!
Carnegie-Mellon had him sign up for a day and time (2/23/08), but won't send a confirmation until a week ahead. Is it safe to buy airfare now, do you think?

Thanks, Cathymee...we are excited! That is good to hear about the audition. IU people have been very nice and friendly to us so far.

Bassoonmom,

My Daughters audition is on February 2. We have not received the packet yet and I have not made hotel reservations. I got an e-mail about her audition and I guess the packet is on the way. We will be driving since we are in Ohio. As soon as the packet arrives, I will confirm everything!

I would be a little afraid to make the plane reservations, but it will be really expensive to make with only one week notice. We just got the University of Maryland confirmation last weekend for her January 26 audition. I immediately booked the fllight and it is $450 for an hour plane ride. I about had a heart attack! I figure the trip to Maryland will be over $700 for the weekend...yikes!

Good Luck!

tickets on Southwest Airlines

If you are waiting on an audition date confirmation and anxious about getting a seat and/or a good fare, keep in mind that Southwest Airlines tickets can be cancelled. They won't give you a refund, but you will have a credit with them until you make another trip with them. We are booking for IU 2/28-2/29 without having heard from IU and will cancel if they don't give my S an audition.

I can't say enough about the virtues of flying Southwest. When my son had strep throat and had to cancel one audition and postpone another we clearly saw the virtues of Southwest. The cost of the reservation he had on another airline was virtually lost (after various fees and penalties) but the fee he paid on Southwest was totally applicable to the flight he eventually took.
Happy New Year to all!

I wish I was called for a live audition. I really hope I wasn't because of department need.

I just received a response from IU! I was soooo happy! My audition is this weekend (On Friday) and I am so nervous. I am applying to the Voice Performance/Music Education program. I still haven't recieved the packet yet, but they did send me an email with all the info. Wish me luck!
