Regarding Composition Interviews and etc.

Hello everyone,

I have an interview at the Boston Conservatory and was hoping someone could illuminate me as to some things to expect and if I should prepare anything in particular. Oh yes, I'm a composition major.

Also, I have applied to NEC and was wondering how selective their composition department is.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks for the info aLFR3dd!

Could you or anyone elaborate on the aural and theory test? Has anyone in the forums taken one at the conservatory before? Lastly, are these composition test for placement or information? I was under the impression that they give placement tests once admitted into the conservatory.

Thanks,
v

PS
Does anyone have news about NEC's composition department and its selectivity?

I can't say specifically if BoCo's aural and theory tests are for admissions or placement (determining first/starter course in undergrad sequence) purposes but in the vast majority of cases, these tests are for placement only.

Some give them at the time of audition, some in the immediate days preceeding actual first semester registration. It's really pretty school specific as to the timing of these tests.

It should be obvious somewhere on BoCo's website as to the purpose of these tests. If in doubt, by all means call and ask.

The short answer is don't worry about these tests. 9 or more times of 10, they are used only for placement. The same is true at the grad school level.

Good luck.

Thanks to everyone who has replied to this thread.

If there are any empathetic grads or the like of BOCO or NEC who could give me some insider tips of what their composition departments want and/or need, then I would greatly appreciate it. I have been in contact on several occasion with the deans of both departments but am hoping a student or parent could shed some more light on each schools intricacies - compositional departments specific.

Thanks,
V

The poster MahlerSnob is a current NEC composition student (senior I believe). A fairly frequent poster, although he hasn't posted recently. You can use "the search this forum" feature searching for threads, or by his user name. If you click on his username link, you'll get a drop down box with options. You can then send him a private message or email via the menu that appears.

He'd probably be your best bet.
