Hey, all: Is there any benefit to beginning to videotape my Junior son in public performances? E.g., he's in a group opening our jazz festival here today, and it would be a pretty good representation of his ability. I'd borrow a video camera, if anyone thinks this is a good idea.

Alot depends on what you intend to due with it. Alot depends on the camera.... don't expect great sound reproduction on most home cam camcorders, even with an external mic. Alot depends on your familiarity, experience.

There have been a few threads here on the subject.

For a learning tool, visual aid (it is important for performers to actually see themselves performing on occassion) or a family keepske, it should be fine.

If you intend it as a submission, tis best to have a backup plan as well. Try it, you have nothing to lose.

Borrow an HD camera (good quality digital camera at a minimum) AND a stereo microphone, preferrably one that connects via a cord so you can place it away from the camera. Use a tripod and place yourself in the first row of a balcony if one is available. Such a setup will give you a reasonably good recording. Of course, you'll need a decent video editing program for your computer, which will let you capture, edit and burn DVDs of the production.

This setup has been great for me and people are impressed with the results.
