Woodwinds @ Round Top Summer Festval

Hi Folks,

Wonder if anyone might be able to comment on the summer music festival at Round Top (International Festival at Round Top Texas) with regard to:

1. Performance opportunity
2. Training and skill level of applicants, and particularly...
3. The woodwind program, as regards oboe and english horn
instruction

I know this is rather specific, but any responses will be deeply appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

I don't know if you're looking at it from the point of deciding whether to go, or whether to apply. This year's apps are closed.

Expect quality of Aspen, MAW, Verbier type experience and ability.

A lot of overview is detailed here http://www.festivalhill.org/index.ph...age&PAGE_id=52

It's a long standing full scholarship festival. It's geared towards college age conservatory level students, grad, prepros and emerging pros. The audition pages lists last year's off-site live audition venues. From the list, the auditions are centered at the hotbeds of high level instruction.

Assume competition from Juilliard, NEC, Eastman, Oberlin, Rice, SF Conservatory and other high quality programs as well as those from other schools.

Faculty is listed, drawn from Dallas, Houston and other major symphonies, as well as distinguished instructional professionals.

I can't specifically address chamber or performance opportunity but the overview will give you an idea. My son did not have personal experience there.

Thanks Violadad... Daughter has been accepted there for this summer and is attempting to decide whether to attend. From your comments it sounds as though she probably should.

Regards, drd

My only other comment would be if you have similar quality acceptances, it might boil down to faculty preference.

Other than timing, I can think of no other reason not to go.

Congrats to D.

My S's friend went for oboe - I think it was not last summer but the summer before. Has a great reputation, and S considered applying there this summer, but ultimately chose not to for personal reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of the program itself.
