| waitlisted at Purchase! Purchase is very competitive and very popular because of the price...we'll try to let them know he's still interested, maybe in an email to the teacher who auditioned him? Anyway, musmom2, it came by email. Maybe acceptances will come by mail. |

| I had no idea that Purchase was this competitive! Only 12 vocalists, you say?! That seems rather small... |

| Re: Purchase Voice About 50 undergrads and 6 grad students, we were told. Their student operas have won some major prize (the name of which I can't recall without getting my notes or looking at the web site) the last several years. Second largest performing arts center ( 3 theaters, but we only saw the lobby) in NY, second to Lincoln Center; with a very "lively" calendar and lots of big names. They are working on becoming an all-Steinway school and had just received a shipment of (30?, again can't remember the details off the top of my head) beautiful 7-footers for the practice rooms. The recital hall in the Music building is beautiful (the Perf. Arts Ctr. is across the quad). Personally, I did not find the campus itself as appealing as many of the others we have visited (after 3 kids this is a fairly high number!), but it would appear that they certainly have built a very nice program. |

| The campus and the academic level of the liberal arts college are the drawback. My question was always --is there a strong enough community in the Conservatory that these things don't matter? Many students leave on the weekends, but I wonder if the music kids do not and have their own small culture--this is a good thing to check out; it certainly has a good reputation as a music program. |

| Thanks musmom2! I'm anxious to check the place out myself in a couple of weeks.
Does that mean they take 50 NEW undergrads each year? Or 50 total (all 4 years added together)?
thanks in advance! |

| Well, I was wrong about the numbers for the jazz program. 250-ish applicants for 24 undergraduate openings this year. In all. "No more than three" on each waiting list per instrument, though! So, maybe chances are good. I remember the waiting list for Amherst college: 900-something!! |

| Jazzmom: Agree with your views on the campus and lower academics required for general admission than some of the other SUNYs. I had wondered too (after the visit/audition) about whether anyone is left around on the weekend, since there are such a high percentage of downstate/Westchester Co. students. I don't know how you check that out, at least not without a second visit and second list of questions!
theperformer: I was speaking only of voice- there are 12-13 new students/yr, for a total of about 50 undergrad. Don't know about total number conservatory-wide. There's a question for you to ask and report back to us! Will be interested to hear your impressions after your visit. |

| You will love the trip with your mom, Theperformer! I can't believe it is already over in my house. Sob, boohoo!! (the anxiety it caused along the way almost undid me though).
Have a wonderful time! |
