Waitlisted

We are now officially in music pugatory. Daughter is waitlisted at Northwestern for flute performance. It is one of her top choices and she really wants to go there.

She contacted the admissions director and Walfrid Kujala via email to reinforce her interest and desire to attend. She learned that there are 2 candidates on the waitlist. The letter says a final determination will be made by June 30th. June 30!!! I may need a prescription....

Anything else she should be doing to improve her standing at Northwestern - don't want to be pushy...HS wind ensemble director says he will contact parties involved in about two weeks to lend support as well.

We are still waiting to hear back from Hartt. I notice most of the acceptances from Hartt are vocal performance, any other winds apply and hear anything yet?

Son's experience a few years back (for fall '02 matriculation) at Hartt was theat he recieived the acceptance letter end of March; I recall the letter date as 3/22 or 3/27. The "fat envelope" from U/Hartford came a few days later.

This was also prior to Hartt using email notification and web based admits.

Good luck to you.

I am stressed out a lot by not yet hearing from Hartt. Their recording says that decisions will be mailed the first week of April, but so many students have heard. It is a little comforting to know we are not the only ones, but my son is getting very quiet and edgy--still three schools outstanding!

violadad, is there a web-based notification? I haven't seen one.

BEK,

I understand how this waiting thing can just be brutal! My D got into Northwestern (vocal performance) a few days ago. Most students seem to have their financial aid package but not us. We check the web site constantly and nothing. Yesterday morning they said 24 hours and this morning they said maybe a few more days. I don't know what is taking so long but I think I need a prescription as well!

Just the acceptance is not enough. If we don't get good aid money D will not be going there! NU is definitely her dream school but we cannot be excited yet.

Best of luck to your Daughter and all others who are playing this agonizing waiting game!

BEK-
How many flutes did Northwestern take? I know NU has one of the top flute studios in the country and one of the most selective schools to get into. On that note, I think your d deserves a huge congrats on being on such a short waitlist. I know and greatly appreciate that this is such a trying situation to go through-the waiting is unbearable, but really...it is an amazing accomplishment. Your d is with the top flautists and that is very impressive. My guess is that most of those accepted probably applied to a few "top" studios, and may have been accepted to them also. Here's hoping their dream studio is not at Northwestern...hard to believe, but could happen!! I know that was the case when my older d went through this two years ago.
I am confused about the June 30 date. That seems so late. Isn't May 1st still the deadline for acceptance?

The June 30 date was for the "final determination" of waitlisted status. The letter urged us to accept any other offers so we would have plans for next year....and we will do that. BUT it is my understanding that if you are waitlisted and are offered a spot later, you can call the school you originally said yes to and decline to come (though you will lose your deposit). All done diplomatically, of course.

I have no idea how many flutes were indeed accepted, only that they waitlisted 2. One slim hope is that one of the accepted flutes will decline because NU doesn't offer a lot of financial aid in comparison to other schools. (Can I say home equity??)

Linnlew, I think the financial aid comes in the letter. You get the acceptance online and then the full package in a day or two. We had to wait for a bit since Easter weekend prevented mail from comming until Monday.

jazzzmom- No email back when son got his acceptance, they had no online admissions system at that point, still dealt with paper.

If you look at the Hartt specific thread in the MT forum, some MT people have already gotten their notification. The poster aLfR3dd on this forum posted his acceptance at Hartt (composition) on the Master List thread within the last two days. But I believe he is international, so his might have been by courier or email.

Only a couple of more days. Hang in there.

I agree totally. I would imagine tuition and lack of financial aid would be a factor for at least one!! But, you still have to plan as if it is not going to happen....that is life in pugatory. I am sure your daughter has made many great accomplishments with many, many more to come.

violadad, you are a wealth of information! CC can cause all sorts of anxieties as you read things which are sometimes incomplete information--and what else can a neurotic parent do but fill in with her imagination all kinds of dire things?

You might want to contact the teacher directly. Son was waitlisted for his top choice for undergrad. An email to the teacher indicated he was the only student waitlisted but that he felt certain that he would not have any openings in his studio. It was hard for son to hear that, but it allowed him to move on emotionally and focus on his other options.

During his grad admissions, he auditioned for the same teacher at 2 different schools. Was admitted to both schools but waitlisted for the studio. He contacted the teacher who strongly advised him to accept a spot on the waitlist at School A and look for another studio at School B. Since son really wanted to study with this particular teacher, he followed the advice and was accepted off the waitlist a few days later.

I know that grad school is different from undergrad but I think the teacher can likely give you a better idea of the likelihood of getting in off the waitlist than the admissions office.

Thanks Shennie. Yes she did contact the teacher right away...that's how she found out there were just 2 on the waitlist. The email back from Kujala said he was glad she was excited about Northwestern and that she had a "fairly good" chance. Also STILL waiting to hear from Hartt.

D applied to Purchase for voice. We are still waiting- nothing in the mail today!
Glad we aren't the only ones! Will be surprised if she gets in there, as she was getting over cold/sore throat and not sounding her best! Also, they only take (or aim for) 3 sopranos, 12 vocalists all together.

Think positive. Being waitlisted for music is pretty common. There are only so many slots and no idea how many kids will accept admissions. If the school comes up short you will likely hear by early May.
