Pierre Monteux School

Anyone heard of this summer program in Hancock, ME? Although it's primarily directed toward conducting students, my son's trumpet teacher recommended it as a terrific learning experience for orchestral lit.

The Pierre Monteux School

Son has a couple other opportunities at standard music festivals, but is leaning toward this one because of the fast rehearsal pace (read or perform 50+ pieces in 6 weeks), more like a real orchestra. The web site leaves alot to be desired as far as "what a mother really wants to know". So any experience, comments, etc. would be truly appreciated.

It's a well established program (for conducting), and it's been around for years. Other than that, I have no insights.

WOOOOOO!!!! GO MAINE!!!!!

we never get mentioned anywhere, so i (a resident) am very proud. haha.

BUT. i have heard wonderful things from friends of mine from all-state, camps, etc. about how great the conducting program is there. It is def. worth looking into. AND Maine is beautiful in the summer.

Son's girlfriend (flute) attended two years ago as a college junior. She loved the amount of material covered and the brisk pace.
She mostly enjoyed Maine but did find it a bit remote, I think.
One of son's current college professors also attended many years ago.

Great program!

My husband attended that program for several summers and was richly rewarded for the experience gained there. The area is so beautiful but the Festival itself is not a "camp" type setting. It is for the serious player to gain much experience in the Orchestral repetoire and for the conductor who is humble enough to work on his/her technique.

Thanks, everyone, for the info. Having received no negative comments here on CC or from my son's music connections, he mailed the deposit today. I'll try to remember to post a report of his experience. Maybe even some first-hand information if I get to visit. A week in Bar Harbor and a few good concerts sound like a great vacation.
