re: instrument expense

Well--this is about my son's cello and it's probably in a different league than your violin search, but when we were looking for a cello a few years back, he tried instruments up to $20,000. His choice--and still beloved instrument--was the cheapest, $2,500 (Chinese) cello. His teacher, who has a Testore, still thinks it's great. I did wonder with the Eastman application why they asked about his instrument (the only school that did). On paper, it doesn't sound like much. In real life, it sounds great.

THe jacobs school of music is unparallelled in general. It's not Julliard, but it's close. Aren't there playwrights written from Indiana that go around the world?

Plus, their theatre is ABSOLUTELY amazing.

Oberlin is a great institution for music too, but the campus at IU brims inspiration.

Thanks for all the input. We've just come back from revisiting U. Mich. and Oberlin - both were wonderful and both teachers were great. The admissions dept. at Oberlin has been particularly kind and helpful. My son came out liking Oberlin best and the UI teacher best. He was torn. But after a lot of nail biting, he has decided to go for the teacher at IU Jacobs next year. I can't believe that we really are, finally, done with this stage of his history!!! I'll wait a couple of days before findiing something else to worry about.

Stringfollies and Son,

Congrats! Don't give in to "buyer's remorse" - I think he'll be pleased, at least violinistically, at IU. Best of luck!

PS. I laughed out loud at your worry comment - the sentiment is all too familiar!

Congratulations! He is lucky to have had three such excellent choices, and I don't think he could have gone wrong at any of these places.

Congratulations Stringfollies & son! My S was torn between Oberlin and IU but felt there would be more opportunities at IU. Maybe we'll run into each other at orientation. As far as worries -- AP exams start next week. The tension around the house is much worse than it was with auditions.

Congratulations, stringfollies! This deciding time is difficult for students and parents alike! My son will be a senior at IU next year (trumpet major), and he is very impressed with the music school there. He gets tired of the large campus and partying students sometimes, but he does love the music school and his teacher. And he has grown SO much musically. I hope your son is also very happy at IU!

Congrats and go Hoosiers (my years at IU were pretty wonderful too). My DD will be going to Jacobs for ballet so maybe they'll run into each other.

I must say I cannot wait to go back with my d who is applying to IU Jacobs next year! Hopefully, if she is asked to audition, there may be a home b ball game!!! (Once a Hoosier....always a Hoosier! Even while living in Nittany Lion territory.)
Best to all of you. IU is truly one of the most beautiful campuses I have seen....wait until the fall....and the first fresh fallen snow.
