is eastern music festival mostly college students?

My daughter is 14 yrs. old, going into the 9th grade. She is a good oboe student, and we're looking for a summer camp. She played first oboe in the Interlochen Intermediate Symphony last year. She loved their camp, but she'll be placed in their intermediate division again this summer, and it won't let her advance any. I can't see spending that kind of money for the same thing again. I'm looking at Brevard and Eastern Music Festival. It looks like Brevard would have kids her age but still let her advance to an appropriate level. Eastern Music Festival also looks challenging, but I'm not clear about their student ages. From things I've read, it appears they have mostly older students. If anyone has experience with Brevard or EMF, please let me know what you think. I'm trying to find the right balance between musical challenge and appropriate supervision. Thanks.

sixjake, welcome.

Here's a previous thread summer camp supervision on level of supervision at a couple of summer programs.

Use the search this forum button, and chose "advanced". Use "summer" as the criteria, and select "thread titles".... you'll get three plus pages of prior summer program threads, both general and specific. Plenty of info already covered.

How much competitive to get in prestigious summer programs like Aspen or Tanglewood. My D is a co-principal in a local youth orchestra but not many awards or solo experiences.

It is highly competitive. I would not worry so much about awards or solo performances, as these are audition, not resume based programs. The key to getting in and fitting in is her current level and years of play, quality of private instruction. Besides y.o. co-principal, it would be easier to assess her chances or to recommend alternatives if you provided a bit more detail.

Thank you, Violadad. My D is 15 yrs old and has been playing the cello for last 10 years and selected to be in All states and All Northwest. She has a good private teacher but there are not many opportunites to play solo with orchesta in our area. She has a recording for Lalo concerto to apply for another music festival this year. I guess it is too late to apply for Aspen this year because it's deadline was Jan 15. Maybe next year.....

northwestern, there are numerous and varied summer programs, some of which are detailed in this thread. If you search this forum, advanced search, use summer as the keyword, and highlight search thread titles, you'll bring up about 5 or 6 posts detailed specifics and experiences.

If this is your first incursion into summer immersion programs, you may want to broaden your scope, and apply to anywhere from 2 to 6 just to broaden your chances.

Your best gauge as to how competitive and your d's chances are to get a sense of where her yo peers of equivalent talent have gone. Her private instructor's comments and recommendations is also a good starting point.

violadad, Thank you for your tip to search summer camps using 'search' tool. I will try that. I will advice her to apply 2-3 camps to have a better chance. First of all, she might need to have a good recording. Thanks again.

northwestern, for general info and background, I've posted links to the main past threads for summer programs below. This list is not all inclusive, but gives a good representative sample of what can be had. For reference, both Strings and Strad magazines publish a separate summer program supplement. The Strad was included with the last issue, I think Strings was an issue earlier. Both of these are available as online searchable databases at The Strad and Strings Magazine: Summer Study Guide

Cosmos, I've posted the UNL Chamber Music Instiute link before. Son was a fellow a few (three ?) years back.

It is exclusively geared to chamber rep, but not necessarily the string quartet literature. The year he attended the Sospiro Winds from Yale SOM and a flute ensemble of Juillliard grad students were among the participants; various ensembles from Jacobs, UMich, and UNL rounded out the group.

I think the number is around twenty-five, and while they encourage preformed groups, you can apply as a "single". It's under the auspices of the Chiara Quartet, the QIR at UNL and Harvard's Blodgett Artists in Residence.

Two unique aspects of the program is that they devote a session a day to the entrepreneurial aspects of music. They also pair one of the composer fellows with an ensemble, who work together on a work in progress.

The downside is that the program is only a week. Son opined it could have been a week longer. It can be a great "filler" between some of the other longer programs. Historically, it has has a rather late application due date, but also has an "opened till filled" parameter.

You must include the Quartet Program, directed by Charles Castleman, at the Suny Fredonia as well as a session in Colorado. It's a fabulous program for ages about 15 through conservatory age. Violin, viola, cello and a few collaborative pianists. My daughter loved it.
