Music Recruiting?

Does anyone know if colleges activly recruit orchestra members or insturment players -- sort of like they do for athletes? How does one get noticed? or get on the radar for music scholarships?

Some specific links from the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/music:

Do colleges look to recruit musicians even if not a music major
Is there such a thing as a music recruit?

And some scholarship threads:
Scholarships for non-majors?
Scholarships/awards pertaining to music
music scholarships for non-majors??

Repost in the music major forum, and you'll get a variety of input from people with experience as majors and non-majors, and in depth knowledge of programs and options. Much will be contingent upon whether your son's interest as an undergrad will lie in music, or academics, or a combined pursuit. Detail of his training, experience, and current level of ability and on what instrument will aid tremendously in helping to offer suggestions for a program or school.
