msd317, I think there are people who would definitely disagree with you. Several people here have kids who attended the NYU program and had nothing but good things to say about it. Different strokes and all of that!

msd --

You are undoubtedly right that students have more freedom in the studio CAP 21 summer program than in the NYU CAP 21 program. With limited exceptions, the NYU students are not allowed to be on their own in NYC. But your description that the studio program is a "conservatory" while the NYU program is a "camp" is perhaps a bit misleading without more discussion of what you mean by the labels.

Students in both programs spend all day Monday through Friday training in studio with regular CAP 21 faculty. The primary difference is in the evening and on weekends. The studio CAP 21 students are free to do whatever they want. The NYU students are required to attend -- and attendance is included in the tuition -- a variety of musicals, operas, plays, masterclasses, and other performance related events in NYC. On weekends, they are taken to museums, bookstores and sheetmusic stores to broaden their familiarity with New York, enhance their understanding of the profession, and further their classroom study.

Summer camp? Well, there is a group trip to Coney Island.

We have a summer program way up here in Montana. It is a six week program for 12-20 year olds. They take an intensive acting class and musical theatre class. Mostly what they do is put on a mainstage production. THis year it is Grease. The acting teacher is from Elon University. Check it out at www.grandstreet.net

Summer Program in PA

You don't indicate the cost range you are looking for but take a look at University of the Arts in Phila. 4 weeks/5 days per week, about $2100 as a commuter and $2600 with dorm room (in 2005). Is among the less expensive college based programs and very good.

Devsey, look at the NYU/Tisch thread at the top of this forum. People have discussed the CAP21 summer program (the one NOT associated with NYU, as well as the one associated with NYU) there. I think the ? of whether it is worth $6K is a matter of personal opinion ... and whether you have the $$ or not!

Oklahoma City University Summer Music Program 2007:
Both instrumental and vocal pre-college training programs. Two programs that might be of interest to members of this forum are:
OCU High School Musical Theater Program -
(Session I) June 17 - July 7
(Session II) July 8 - July 28 A three week intensive pre-college residency program that provides both classroom training and on-stage experience. In the mornings, students attend classes in music theory, acting, dance, improv, diction, scene study, audition prep and vocal master classes by the OCU Bass School of Music faculty. Nights are for rehearsals of our fully staged musical. Tentative shows are "Les Miz" and "The Pajama Game" (pending rights approval). Sessions are back-to-back and accepted students may request admission to both. A different show will be presented each session. Programs directed by Dr. David Herendeen, Director of OCU Opera/Music Theater Program.
OCU Vocal Arts Institute

This residency program is designed for students who want to pursue a career in opera/classical voice or those who want to develop their legit singing technique. Daily classes cover music theory, diction, classical/opera repertoire, vocal pedagogy and private voice lessons. Students also work on opera scenes from classic works which are presented in an evening
performance. Undergraduate college students may also audition for admission to this program. You may view our website at http://www.okcu.edu/music/academy/summerprg.aspx. Devsey....this thread is just for a master listing of summer theater programs. There is another thread for DISCUSSION of summer theater programs. Here is the link to that long discussion thread: Summer Programs - Discussion

I have bumped that thread up for you.

As well, like NotMamaRose suggested, to ask questions about the summer musical theater programs at CAP21 (both the one through NYU/Tisch and the one just through CAP21), a good idea would be to visit the NYU/Tisch sub forum (see links at the top of this MT Forum) and find threads relating to the summer programs there.

Just got the catalog for the US Performing Arts Camps. A variety of programs (1 week for around $1100) at locations around the country. Check out all the camps at usperformingarts.com

One caught my eye: "College Audition Workshop" at UCLA July 15-20 or July 29-Aug 3. Only for those entering 12th grade through age 20 (target is H.S. seniors or Community College transfer students).
