I've often wondered this and thought if anyone knows, someone here would! My D has performed with the School of Performing Arts and Creative Experiences summer program for the past 3 years. She is the senior member this year and it will be her last year with the program. Tonight is opening night of Guys and Dolls (she is Adelaide) and she wants to give the Director and music director flowers. Should she present the flowers to them tonight at the end of the show or closing night?
My D and her castmates always did this on closing night. They would make a short speech (well, a "speech" might be overstating it ... they expressed their appreciation for the director and musical director) and presented each director with a lovely bouquet. Of course, I am sure that the gesture would be appreciated on opening or closing night.
thanks for your answers, we will do the flowers closing night. She did a great job last night, of course, I might be just a "little" biased!
Soozievt, I love the idea of writing a little note too, thanks for the suggestion!
I did see that and oddly enough we are visiting friends in Charleston that week. D however is very anti- competitions of this sort and won't even consider trying.
I did see that Kyle! My husband has wanted my d to audition for the last 2 years but she would have nothing to do with it. I wonder, since it's going to be right here if she'll try out this year just for the heck of it.
And BTW, I did get flowers for D to give the directors and I'm so glad I did because we were the only ones to do so.
Side note while the topic is still alive - advise her to present the present to him NOT on stage. I don't know if this is a present from your daughter personally, or from the entire cast, but there's really not much tackier than seeing everyone on stage stop the production after bows to give their director/MD/choreographer/etc. their "goodbye presents".
I think that it all depends on the program. I prefer that the cast present me with flowers etc. in the lobby after the show. My true reward is watching my students grow and have a good performance. When the cast is applauded, I see that as my applause, because it is a team effort and I'm the leader of the team.
Sometimes, however, when I've worked with young children, the audience is mostly made up of family members of the cast and the the cast and their families appreciate an an opportunity to publicly offer they're appreciation. I don't think of it as being "tacky."
