PSU Musical Theatre Major

I am wondering what it was like to audition and any information. What did you think of the dances, if you are trained just through doing shows should I be okay? Also choices with song selection and such. If I apply early admissions will they let me in even more knowing that I plan to audition. If you went through the process already any information would be wonderful.

Thanks!

Check under the "Pennsylvania State University" link under Musical Theatre Schools, you should be able to find everything you need there.

My D auditioned at PSU last year. They began with an info session for all auditionees, where they told us: "PSU is extremely selective, and you probably don't have much of a chance of getting in -- so don't be nervous!" I was horrified at that comment, but my D said it actually did make her feel less nervous. Regarding the dance audition -- there were two very difficult combinations: ballet and theater dance. Their dance director is a Fosse-trained dancer who worked with him in several of his Broadway shows. I strongly suggest some summer classes if you have not had training. There is a heavy emphasis on dance in this program. PSU had immediate callbacks the day of the audition. If you are not called back, you are not under consideration for the program. Callbacks consisted of ear-training exercises. Students were notified within 2 weeks of the audition whether they were a Yes, a No, or a Maybe. This program only takes 10 - 12 freshmen, so it is extremely selective. Most students will get a No or a Maybe -- very few are accepted immediately.

In spite of the competitive atmosphere at the audition, we both really liked what we saw of the program here. Current students helped with the auditions, and they were all very friendly and helpful.
