As I was reading a thread today I noticed that someone said that they did not make it into any of their desired MT schools and so they went into a school with a non-audition program, worked hard and then the next year they auditioned at 10 schools and was accepted into all of them. If my memory serves me, I think she (the poster) was now a proud senior attending CMU. My question is this...do schools accept students in their sophmore year? Do they usually have openings? Do they start out as freshman? How does this work? Does anyone have any experience with this?

I have been lurking for about a year now and rarely post because all my questions are answered as I read all the wonderful posts ... my daughter is a senior this year (class of '08) so "HI" to all the parents of seniors! I hope we can share stories and experiences very soon!

I'm not the person you mention, but my daughter was not accepted into any MT programs last year and attended a BA program for one year; she is transferring into a BFA program this fall. She was accepted at two programs and cancelled her third audition this spring because she was happy with the acceptances she got.
She will be entering with enough credits to be a sophomore, but she will begin the BFA curriculum with the freshmen. Her acting class credits really won't count; she has to do their curriculum. There are other credits that will transfer--things like stagecraft, and most of her gen ed credits. The things that won't transfer are because she is going into the Honors program and has to fulfill those specific requirements--but it's worth it to her. All in all, it will probably take her one extra semester to finish, with that last semester possibly containing only one acting class.
She did use her year to get everything she could out of the program she was in, and worked on her audition material. I really think it was her repertoire that was not right the first time around. Your daughter should choose her repertoire very carefully and have a wide variety of schools on her list. Best of luck!

Cast Mom- To find lots of information about this subject, go to the main MT page, and click on Search this Forum. Enter the search term Transfer and you will find pages of discussion. The bottom line is, like much of this process- it cna be complicated and frustrating. There are many schools that do not accept transfer students at all. Some will accept you, but only if you agree to take freshman status, and maybe some rare programs that accept training you have already started at another school.

The young lady in question (who did not get into BFA programs of her choice the first time, and then reauditioned and ended up at CMU) has graduated from Carnegie Mellon, I believe. Also, some programs *do* take transfers, but some do not, such as CMU. The young woman who has now graduated had to begin all over again -- as a freshman -- at CMU. Please check each school in which you are interested to ascertain whether they accept transfers or not.

Thanks everyone for the information. Hopefully my d will get into one of the schools she is auditioning for and she won't have to go this route. I just wanted to know if what I read about in that particular thread (about tranferring) was common or not...I just had never heard of anyone doing that before. We won't cross that bridge unless we need to.
