Hello everyone!
Do you guys have any suggestions about what to wear for the acting/vocal portion of an MT audition? I have been told to dress "nicely and comfortably"...but what does that entail?

Also:
Heels vs. flats for girls?
Black and white vs. color?
Patterns vs. solid?

I've been told that an audition is like a job interview. You want to dress up to show that you care and to look nice, but don't come in in a tux or prom dress. Wear something like you would wear to church. I would suggest a dress that looks nice, but color doesn't really matter. Heels vs. Flats- whatever matches the outfit. Patterns vs. Solids- don't think that really makes a difference. Remember- make yourself look good, it never hurts

Ladies, heels make your legs look longer and more shapely! This is a plus in a field where appearance does matter.
Remember you're auditioning from the moment you walk into the room. Have your game face on immediately! Dress well, be pleasant and friendly, and be very, very nice to the accompanist. You never know when that person at the piano is going to turn out to be the head of the department or first assistant--this happened with my D. You gain or lose points with every aspect of your appearance, which includes clothing and personal demeanor!

The rule of thumb for any audition seems to be if you feel good you'll look good. Wear a dress or skirt that you like. If you burst into "I feel pretty" when you wear it, the people you're auditioning for will probably look at you in a more positive light. Likewise, if YOU aren't comfortable with what you're wearing, that will project to your audience. If you betray a look of embarassment or discomfort on your face, the audience will feel embarassed or discomforted for you, and thats something you never want.

I am doing a monologue as Emily from Our Town. I am thinking of wearing a white knee length dress and a simple black ballet wrap (b/c the dress is definitly a summer one). I want to wear ballet flats- there is a lot of movement- but all this heel/no heel thing is confusing me lol. I also can't decide whether to wear my hair up (recommended) or down (best befits the character). I'm just hoping the outfit will be professional but still close enough for this method actress to identify with her character during the audition. Any tips?

btw i have chin length curly very blonde hair (think marilyn monroe)... I am wondering if putting it up will hide a unique feature...

Patsy, where did you hear that wearing your hair up for an acting and singing audition is "recommended"? I think you should wear your hair the way it is most flattering. Also, some musical theater schools ask for two monologues, so keep in mind that you want to be able to get into character for the second (when it is required) without having to leave the room to change outfits. Re: heels. Again, wear what you are most comfortable wearing. As someone said above, the important thing is that *YOU* feel attractive and as if you are putting your best face forward. (I have heard that NYU asks kids to kick off their shoes and audition barefoot. But as far as I know, that's the only school that asks that.) One last thing: many MT programs also require a dance audition. So factor that clothing change in when you are figuring out what to wear. Best of luck!
