High School Musicals? Yes or No

I am not convinced that doing a high school musical right now is a good idea. With college applications, scholarship applications and the usual dance, piano and voice lessons, I feel it is "overload". Add "all state chorus weekend", and 5 auditions to the mix and I think it is "lethal". Did anyone else pass on their H.S. musical this year? Doesn't it make more sense to wait until March when the auditions are over and do a community productions then? I'm interested in your thoughts on this.

Well...I'm DIRECTING my school Musical. Ain't that crazy!? Applications are due next week anyways...so, those don't affect me. Just manage your time, working to hard on audition materials isn't healthy.

I would just do what you Want to do. If you love doing the musicals, then they might be a good outlet for you. If they are stressful and more work than fun, then re-think doing them. I think it is a good idea to keep balance right now with the stress of college auditions. You know what you can handle.

i am not doing my high school's "big musical" in march, but i'm directing the "little musical" in may, which starts after auditions have ended. i haven't had time this fall to pursue voice lessons/dance classes so i'm happy i'll have the time to in the spring!

I agree with llong39 - my D chose to do her musical (it was Sunday in the Park with George and she HAD to do it), along with her planned senior recital fundraising performances, 3 comminity theater shows, and all her school and lessons. Now she needs to be busy (her words) but her coment was that doing all this kept her from obsessing over college stuff - which seemed like a good thing. It took a lot of scheduling but it worked.

Do what you feel you can handle...but know when to say no!

Good luck!

Yep, plan on being the lead in the high school musical [A funny thing happened on the way to the forum] that opens mid-february. Then starting up a community theatre musical [Camelot] in March. Should be fun!

Mikksmom- four shows at once?! How crazy! I did two at once sophomore year and it was... an experience...

I'm probably going to bypass my school musical this year in favor of the smaller one-act play for competition... partially because if there are any freshmen in the one-act, they won't be obnoxious like the freshmen in the musical always are, and partially because I really just don't like the musical picked for this year.

Chelly, Only 2 were overlaps completely but they were all consecutive starting in October and not ending until late April - matched audition/notification cycles almost exactly. But it did keep her mind off of the waiting and such. It was a wild ride to be sure!!

It looks like D. is going to do the musical. It's not like we have never been busy before. I'm sure it will be a great play.
