| For NETC -- my d just got a notice that she has a spot for acting, but they said there were so many vocal auditioners that the spots for singing were gone.... They're supposed to be emailing her back the exact time. Does it make sense to audition for straight acting if you'd really like to do MT?... Has anyone ever been asked to sing at a straight acting audition?... I assume that having the opportunity to audition at all is valuable, but time/$ do factor into the decision a bit.... |

| Congrats to your d bestshot! I don't think mine has heard anything yet. Did yours get the notice by email or snail mail? Mine also applied for acting (with the hope of also singing & dancing as needed if hired.) |

| My daughter got an audition slot at Strawhat but their email stated that after reviewing her resume, they were offering her a dancer who sings spot as opposed to her characterizing herself as a singer who dances! She's a bit confused by this and will be emailing them back for clarification. She's still deciding on whether to go as she was offered a theme park job performing in Kansas City and is still in the running for a theme park job performing at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. Yikes! |

| For NETC -- this happened a few years ago -- they had so many more musical theatre applicants than acting applicants that they gave some Musical Theatre applicants spots in the Acting only room.
I am an artistic director of a theatre that casts at NETC -- we have representitives in BOTH the acting and the musical theatre rooms... we mainly cast our mainstage musical company out of the musical theatre room. We cast our Children's Theatre company (a company that does require singing actors) out of both rooms.... we ask all called back for the children's theatre company to sing in their callback.
I know there are other theatres which do mainstage musicals and children's theatre musicals which cast out of both the acting and musical theatre room. There are also quite a few companies that perform Shakespeare out of the acting only room.
In the past there were a few people who were strong dancers who auditioned in the acting only room and asked to be seen at the musical theatre dance call. I do not know if this is something that they will allow again this year.
I hope this helps! |

| Interesting....so IF auditioning one should be prepared to do a little of everything even if only slotted for an acting audition. That's good to know, thanks KatMT (& do you need an actor who dances and sings?! )
jordansmom, sounds like your d will have some decisions to make (lucky!)

| Netc OK, this is what was so frustrating a couple of years ago. My daughter applied to NETC, albeit very late, but before the deadline. Paid the fee, yada yada. They replied that she was NOT going to be able to audition; they didn't "select" her. But now, the way bestshot puts it, "all the singing auditions were gone", so they don't really SELECT the auditioners; they take them on a rolling basis, it looks like... So of course this year my procrastinating daughter waited til the last minute again and probably won't get a slot....I guess it's working at the Dr. office again for her this summer! Ecchh!! |

| RossJi...they DO select who can audition at both NETC and StrawHats and it is not a first come first serve way of filling slots. However, they do fill the slots on a rolling basis and so those who apply earlier are reviewed for selection earlier. After a certain point, the slots are filled. But someone can apply early and still not be selected to audition. |

| melsmom -- I do not think for all of the companies that audition in the acting room, are looking for actors who dance and sing -- I know that we look in the acting room for actors who can sing and play an instrument... we do most of our Children;s Theatre casting at NETC amd for the past few years we probably drew about 1/2 of the company from the acting room and 1/2 from the musical theatre room... although 5 doesn't really break into halves |

| Well, from reading bestshot's post above, since they pull from the mt applications to fill the acting room, it shouldn't be to far of a stretch to find singers & musicians! This should be very interesting to see how it works out :/ |

| My d got her NETC appt today via snailmail. She got her ap in at the end of Nov & it stated that you could send a SASE for notification, which is how she was notified. Don't know if that's the case for those who did not send the sase. She did not get an email. So, yay! we get to see her in March for a weekend |

| Congratulations! The email my d received from NETC asked if she would accept a straight acting audition if they couldn't offer her a singing audition. She sent the SASE also. Last Monday, they said they were finalizing the schedule "in a few days." Letters were supposed to go out Friday. I wonder if, in selecting singers, they look at the production schedule to make some decisions based on the roles companies are casting? School mail delivery is TERRIBLE, so I don't know if d got a letter or not and Monday is a holiday. If it's comparable to other mailings, she should get it sometime in April.... |

| RossJi....is your D in a dorm this year? (mine is not) When my D was in the dorms, she had some problems also getting mail. She also did not receive money that was sent from relatives either.
My daughter did StrawHats only after freshmen year and didn't audition for summer stock last year or this year and does not wish to. However, the year she did StrawHats, we had the mail sent to our house at home if I recall. If your D doesn't hear soon, she can email and ask if it has been mailed out to her since she hasn't received it. Isn't your D also doing StrawHats though? If she is late on NETC and doesn't make it, she'll have StrawHats. Also, I hear many kids at school are attending other summer stock auditions (held by each theater independently) that take place in the city, although of course that gets very tricky with not being able to miss much school at all. But it is one advantage to being in NYC. |

| soozievt Hey Soozievt! Yes, my daughter is in a dorm this year. It makes me mad that someone is getting away with taking these kids' money from grandma/Uncle Joe/etc. Seems like there should be an investigation, but...whatever.
Yes, she is doing Strawhat, but some people told me that many of the theater jobs are offered at NETC so there are fewer jobs once Strawhat auditions come around. In fact, one of her friends was offered a job on the spot at NETC last year, and that theater also was present at Strawhat, so that's one example that I know of firsthand.
I'm so sorry I didn't get tickets for your daughter's show; they sold out quickly! My daughter called me to tell me she couldn't get me any tickets
I am SUPER BUMMED! How is it going? Hope someone bootlegs it and it gets on Youtube so I can see it.... lol! |
