Song Selection Question

I was wondering how one classifies up-tempo and ballad songs, other than the obvious sound to the piece. Is there a specific tempo at which these songs are marked?

Thanks

It would be a little subjective if you classify by tempo because that all depends on your time signature. Basically it revolves around the obvious sound as you mentioned and the emotional content of the song. But beware: there are a lot of songs that are hard to tell if they're upbeat or a ballad, for instance This is the Moment and Old Red Hills of Home.
