Summer Programs

I will be finishing my freshman year of college this upcoming spring and I want to continue on with training through the summer. I am probably going to audition for NETC/Strawhats and I know NYU has a professional summer program for college students, but are there any other musical theater training programs that people recommend? Thanks!

Circle in the Square Theater Program (for MT), in NYC

I'm assuming you referred to the CAP21 summer program for over age 18 as the "NYU" one but that is not truly through NYU. Perhaps you meant another program, but that is the one for MT.

NYU looks to have a summer program through Steinhardt for MT -- NYU Summer Study in Music Theatre - Programs - Music Theatre - NYU Steinhardt

Manhattan School of Music has a program -- It may or may not be for current college students. The people I know have been graduating seniors or people out of school. But it is worth exploring -- Manhattan School of Music: Professional Musical Theater Workshop

As Soozie mentioned also Circle in the Square and Cap21.

I know people who have done the Manhattan School of Music, Circle in the Square and Cap21 programs and loved them.

I do not know people who have done the NYU or the Penn State Program.

I forgot about the NYU/Steinhardt one! I had looked into that a bunch last year for a student who was in high school but you can be in college and do it too. Thanks, Kat. CITS and the CAP21 ones were what came to my mind at first.

I'm an undergrad and I'm looking for a great MT summer program for college students. I have friends who have attended Circle's summer program and loved it, but I also have another friend who attended Cap and loved it. Someone told me to kind of stay away from NYU/Cap 21 right now because of the issues they're having. Any suggestions as to which I should chose? Anyone whose attended can you give me feedback on either?

I would not think that Cap21 would be impacted in terms of conservatory training because they and NYU are severing their connection. I do not believe the CAP21 Conservatory program was ever affiliated with NYU in terms of the training that CAP21 offered.

In other words CAP21 was a has been one of the studios where NYU students have studied over the past 15 or so years. Students enrolled directly in the CAP21 studio have not been studying at NYU.

Actually KatMT that's not so true - there are some NYU students who are in different studios but take the CAP21 Professional Summer Program for credit. That was what my daughter saw last summer. But you are right that one has nothing really to do with the other.

The CAP21 summer programs (both the professional one for over age 18, as well as the one through CAP for high school students), in addition to the new 2 year professional conservatory program have no relation whatsoever to NYU. The affiliation (or not) of NYU with the four year NYU/CAP21 studio has NO bearing on the summer programs or the two year professional certificate programs at CAP21 which have no affiliation or relationship with NYU.

In terms of your decision of where to attend for the summer, NOTHING has been changed with regard to the summer professional program at CAP21 and this should be a non-issue in your decision making process.

What an outstanding program. Summer Study at Penn State was an amazing experience for my daughter. A well-supervised program and a great educational value. There are also programs at Vermont and Colorado too...my son may do another one of their programs in the future.

Amtc - Just curious, were the NYU students studying at CAP21 in the summer doing so through NYU, or independently through the CAP21 Conservatory? Can college students receive college credit through the independent CAP21 Conservatory summer program for college students?

KatMT - I can't answer that definitively but my daughter is certain that there were NYU students who received credit for participating in the CAP 21 Summer Professional program. I'm guessing it was similar to a student receiving credit for attending RADA or BADA but it's purely a guess. Perhaps NYU has a selection of summer programs that theatre students can get credit for? She doesn't attend NYU and wasn't even a college student last summer so it wasn't relevant to her, she just became friends with some of the kids in her group.

My d attended CAP21 in 2008 but did not take it for credit through NYU because of the tuition difference. The credits would not transfer in her case because she was transferring from a BA program to a BFA and had too many credits as it was. In 2009 she attended Broadway Theatre Project and loved it. Question please : As a former vocal performance major her dance training is weak and she wants to stay in NYC this summer and take dance at 2 studios and focus on little else. She says she must attend classes at 2 studios to find enough classes at her level to make staying in NYC for 6 or 7 weeks worthwhile. She is very motivated and I know she will work hard. She is in a conservatory now and loves it but needs more dance than her schedule permits. Sounds like a good plan to me as we can't find a college summer program that has dance for theatre at her level for her age.
Do you agree?

That sounds like a good plan to me

. If she is going to be there for the whole summer she might also look to see if there is an internship she could do part-time with a casting or talent agent to see the business from the "other side". I had a student who did this last summer and combined it with dance classes at various studios.

An internship is a good suggestion. It would allow her to add more to her resume and see, as you suggested the "other side". I would like her to see the business side of musical theatre and be as informed as she can be about her prospects for gainful employment and self-fullfillment.
