If you posted here, just know that on another thread there are whole bunch who either didn't get anything yet, or who got the letter to home just a day or two ago, while their schools have not.
DS got the finalist letter to home yeasterday (relief ) while the school still had no word. Checking with other NMSF at his school, about half got letters to home yesterday. I bet most of the rest will get their home letter today.
Something must have happened to the mailings to schools, which went out Feb. 1st. From the other thread this delay seems to have affected most regions, so it may or may not be the weather. They certainly have had such issues in Evanston, Ill, from where they are mailed.

It's also entirely possible that the schools have the mailing and for whatever reason are sitting on it. D's school did not inform students of their semi-finalist status until mid-September, and they were notified at the end of August. We got the letter at home yesterday, but no mention at school.

...or they have no clue like my school. They received the mail and were like "whatever, she'll probably know and we don't know what to do with it" and so I had to hunt it down (and found out why I didn't receive the information). -__-

At DS's school they DO make a sort of big deal of it, and his principal made a fuss over the semi-finalists. So I think something went wrong with the packets mailed to the schools' principals.

@205mom, the school does make a difference. My former high school makes NO mention of NMSF or NMF. This seems to be policy.

" This seems to be policy "

Not a good policy, I'd say, plumazul.
The reality of life is competition. Some educators are horrified by this. If you were sent to a school that eschews completion of any sort, I can accept their avoidance.

But for most schools, who hail athletic or artistic achievement, there is NO EXCUSE for not honoring academic and intellectual excellence.

Corporate scholarships for Finalists

According to the NMSC Finalist schedule that we received from NMSC and that has been posted online, Corporate scholarship notification is supposed to start this week. If anyone hears, would they please post here? One of the many things I have found most useful about this forum is finding out when notifications start rolling... helps to get an idea of timing, when to keep an extra sharp eye out, etc.

As always, thank you for your help and best wishes to everyone who is waiting to hear on the NMSC scholarships!!

Was there something particular you had to do to apply for a corporate scholarship -- besides being named a NMF?

Some corporate employers may have their own policies for applying for a corporate NM scholarship for an employee's child. Employees would probably have to find out those policies through the corporate HR office.

It seems that most corporate NM scholarships go to children of employees. Some apparently go to NMFs who are not children of employees but perhaps have an interest in that industry. There would be nothing additional that a student would have to do to apply for such a scholarship.

Haven't heard anything on corporate scholarship yet, but I dug out my D's letter from 3 years ago, and it was dated March 19 (with a reply deadline of March 26!), so hopefully something will be coming soon.

To answer momofsongbird's question, it's not even necessary to be NMF for the special corporate scholarships - they seem to go down the list of high scorers until the money runs out.

It depends. There are three major reasons for why corporate scholarships are given
  1. Corporations benefit to employees, by rewarding their children for academic performance
    e.g.
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc.–Every Finalist who is the child of an employee of the corporation or a subsidiary will be offered an award

    or
GEICO Philanthropic Foundation–3 awards for Finalists who are children of associates of GEICO Corporation and its subsidiaries.
  2. Corporations and non profits to encourage students in a particular field
    e.g.
Chevron Corporation–10 awards—8 awards for Finalists who are children of employees of the corporation and its affiliated companies; 2 awards for other Finalists planning to major in geological and earth sciences/geosciences, geological/geophysical, or petroleum
    engineering.

    or

CACI International Inc–5 awards—3 awards for children of employees of the company and its subsidiaries; 2 awards for Finalists who are planning to major in
    certain technological and mathematical fields.
  3. Students who live in a particular area
    e.g.
Glenn and Ruth Mengle Foundation–Up to 4 awards for Finalists from three Pennsylvania counties— Clearfield, Elk, and Jefferson

    or

Omron Foundation, Inc.–5 awards for Finalists with preference (1st) for those who are children of employees of Omron; (2nd) for those from Illinois or Michigan intending to major in electrical engineering, science, or mathematics.

    or
PPG Industries Foundation–68 awards—40 awards for children of employees of PPG Industries, Inc. and its subsidiaries; 28 awards for residents of communities where PPG has operations.

How do you apply?
Some corporations need you to apply through their HR Department (Boeing being an example), others will get your information from the NMF form that student fills out. So you need to have filled out the NMF form correctly, and you do not have to do anything else. For example if you live in Illinois and was interested in EE, you should have filled that out correctly, else you may not be considered for the Omron scholarship.

These awards may have other conditions or the number may be limited.

DS just got a letter telling him he's been selected for corporate scholarship, and saying that it is available to him at any qualifying institution. This was a complete surprise (although a nice one!), since neither of us works for a corporation that offers scholarships, we don't live in a geographical area that has identified sponsors, and DS didn't fill out anything other than the standard packet that NMSC sent him. The offer date was March 23rd, and the reply deadline is April 4th.

What a great way to start the weekend!
