My daughter just finished her junior year in the second semester with 3 B's and she also got an F on an online virtual school AP course which she was not able to complete. She is retaking that course this summer for grade forgiveness. Will this affect her qualifying for National Merit Scholarship? She has a 2300 on SAT and 36 on ACT. Please advise. Thank you.

Your daughter should be fine, since she did not complete the course and has an opportunity to retake it. As a parent, I believe you have just reason to be worried, but you can rest easy after reading this post. As long as your daughter meets the PSAT cutoff, is involved in extracurriculars, maintains at least a 3.7 GPA she should be in prime position to receive the NMSQT scholarship. Just for the record, I am an Indian student and my parents were worried about my receiving the National Merit Scholarship because I made a high "B" in one class. In the end, they had nothing to worry about!

She met the PSAT cutoff and her GPA is 3.89 in the IB curriculum. I don't know whether that makes any difference. Thanks for your reply Leo2400

I'm glad I could help, please see my reply in your other post. From my experience with college admissions and what admissions officers are looking for, I am sure your daughter will be fine. Admission into top level schools was difficult for me, because I am an Indian male, but I think my research in Physics and performance in country-wide science competitions helped.

From past posts I have read on CC, she should be fine. I have the same concern about my rising senior student, who got her first C in a HS course (Pre-Calc). Long story ... new, brilliant but very bad teacher who got fired from her magnet school near the end of 3rd quarter. She never recovered in the class with subs for the rest of the year. Mostly A's and and few B's in all other HS classes. A 224 on PSAT in Virginia. She hopes to be a NMSF and then perhaps a finalist, and looking at U Alabama (hoping for a full ride), as well as UVA and U Miami.

Will the summer grade replace the old grade in a way that the old grade will NOT be anywhere on the transcript?

Is her high school getting these online grades? Are they part of the high school?

One C usually does not keep a student from making Finalist.

And, was the C a quarter grade or a semester grade? If it was a quarter grade, it won't be on the transcript.

M2CK --- The C was her final grade. She was consistently average for the year except for 3Q when she got a B with the first sub (who was the former head of her school's math department and a fantastic teacher). Her school's transcripts only show final grades. I am hoping that her counselor will give a bit of an explanation for the C in his rec if she makes the NMSF cutoff and has to send in an NMF packet. We raised our concern to him about it. Sort of a unique circumstance with the hiring and firing of a brilliant but socially inept and ineffective teacher last school year. She's not the only kid in this situation.

This course was not from her high school. But the virtual school will send the final grade to her high school which will be in the transcript and once she receives a better grade by retaking the course that will also go on the transcript. So I am not sure how it is going to affect her.

I would find out what the high school is going to show on the transcript...both grades? (problem!)......only the replacement grade? (good!)
