University of Kentucky Scholarship Package Questions

I posted this on the University of Kentucky forum but it's not very active so I thought I might get more responses here...

I know University of Kentucky just increased their NMF scholarship package. I am trying to understand what all expenses remain after the the scholarship kicks in. I am also wondering if the automatic College of Engineering scholarship base on ACT scores is stackable with the NMF packages.

1. The website lists the semester tuition and fees for an undergraduate as $4838 for instate.
I can't find anywhere where it breaks out tuition vs. mandatory fees. If a person is on the NMF scholarship, tuition is covered but not mandatory fees so knowing the breakdown between the two is important. Does anyone know what that breakdown is?

2. Also from the UK website it looks like most engineering classes are charged an additional $53/credit hour (this would be $159/per class) . For an upper division engineering student this would be an additional ~$750 or so each semester. I assume these fees are not part of tuition and would not be covered by the NMF package. Can someone confirm if I am interpreting that correctly?

3. Since it is an departmental scholarship, does the college of Engineering automatic scholarship of $1500/semester with an ACT of 29/Math ACT of 33 stack on top of the NMF scholarship?

I'll be giving UK a call sometime this week with these questions but I would love to hear of anyone's experiences.
thanks

UK Office of Development | The President's Scholarship Initiative - The Costs of a UK Education

According to that site, the cost of attendance for UK is 23,100 for instate.

It won't matter whether you are instate or out of state since tuition is covered.

The value of the scholarship is around 65000 plus iPad plus 2000 for study abroad.

That means you would have to pay 92400-65000=27400 for 4 Years.

I am not sure about point 2 but I think that it would be not covered.

Yes, I think you will get the 1500 per semester added to your nmf scholarship package

National Merit or Achievement Finalist Patterson Scholarship

National Merit® or Achievement® Finalists who designate UK as their college choice with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation by mid-April are eligible for the Patterson Scholarship. The Patterson Scholarship is in addition to the UK National Merit College-Sponsored Scholarship of $2,000, which is awarded though the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.*

Patterson Scholarship
The Patterson Scholarship is a renewable scholarship, valued at $68,000, and includes the following: Four-year renewable award covers the cost of tuition, room and board, $1,000 yearly stipend, an iPad2®, and $2,000 for a Summer Education Abroad program. No scholarship application is required for the UK National Merit®/Achievement® Finalist Patterson Scholarship, but finalists are encouraged to submit a completed Academic Scholarship application to be considered for the Singletary Scholarship Program. If a student is awarded a Singletary Scholarship, that award will replace the Patterson Scholarship.*

Students may receive only one scholarship through the Academic Scholarship Program.

So, does that mean that the OOS portion of tuition is NOT covered? Just the instate amount?

........................................Per Semesster
Lower Division Resident *** *** $4,838.00 **
Lower Division Non-Resident*** $9,932.00
Upper Division Resident*** $4,978.00
Upper Division Non-Resident*** $10,065.00

If the NMF scholarship only covers the instate amount, then that's an additional $10k per year. Is that right?

Not really sure tbh

Since, it said tuition, I assumed it was for both instate and outofstate.

University of Kentucky NM Scholarship

Mason said it was for both instate and outofstate in the last post.

It seems that with tuition room, board, and a $1000 annual stipend plus a $2000 official NMF scholarship it seems there wouldn't be more than ~$2k out of pocket annually to cover unless the fee structure (or some other unknown direct or indirect cost) is really high - the $53/credit hour class seems like it could be one of those fees.

As an earlier post said, there seems to be a disconnect of about $7k/year between the value of the NMF scholarship package and the COA. I'm just trying to understand what accounts for the discrepancy.

If there is anyone that has had experience as an out of state student with the NMF package or the Patterson scholarship only potion I would love to hear how it played out financially.

Hopefully, we can get clarification on the UK NMF scholarship for OOS students.

Since the UK NMF scholarship has changed in recent years, it's hard to know for sure. Even if a student got X last year or a previous year, who knows what it is this year.....as we know these things can change year to year.

These sound like good opportunities for NMF, but what would UK academics be like for an OOS student in general? Are they trying to increase the number of OOS students?

I just talked to a lovely woman in the University of Kentucky academic scholarships office. The Patterson Scholarship (National Merit) DOES fully cover OOS tuition (they only put the instate tuition specific $$ amount in the description to avoid confusion for instate students.) Fees are additional but they average $533/semester.

So: Four-year renewable award covers the cost of tuition (both instate and out of state,) room and board, $1,000 yearly stipend, an iPad2®, and $2,000 for a Summer Education Abroad program.

The additional $2000 UK National Merit College-Sponsored Scholarship is broken up over 4 years, so that's an another $500 a year.

They are in the process of building a new Honors Living/Learning community with an expected completion date of Spring 2013 and fully expect to move in new students in Fall of 2013.

Thanks for clarifying the scholarship package RobD!
My son like's the idea of state flagships and getting out of the south (I know Kentucky is still south- but not relative to Georgia!) so we will probably visit the school this Fall. I'll post our experience when we get back.
