I believe it was confirmed earlier in this thread that the full list of semifinalists were provided to at least some principals/counselors in other schools. This statement would thus appear to be a misrepresentation.

I like the press releases. It's great to see kids get their names in the paper for their academics. And I understand why you'd want those all to go out on the sane day. But I don't like the idea of people totally unaffiliated with a student's school receiving notice before the student's family does.

Guys--I'm starting to get really worried. My guidance counselor told me today she hasn't received anything from National Merit, but typically gets it in the middle of October. I haven't been able to call the corporation, either.

Is the deadline for the entire finalist application (essay and online form) the 10th?

My S school just announced the Merit semifinalists today along with Achievement semifinalists and Commended scholars.

Question- my daughter went to her gc today and was told she did not make the semi finals, and that they no longer did the "commended" student designation. Is that correct? Has any other student been given that info?

Completely false. If her score was 200 or higher she should receive "commended" status at least. You can check the state cutoffs listed earlier in this thread to see if she did qualify for semifinalist. Better still, call the NMSC (number is immediately above your post) and find out her status directly from the definitive source.

But don't I have to write an essay or something...? Send my scores? Name my top choice colleges? Or is that all a later time?

Haven't called NMC so I'm asking you guys to verify. Glad that she got the information, but the way she's gone about it is a little worrying.

Yes, she is supposed to print a letter with login information and give it to you so you can do your portion of the application (which does include an essay). Then once you have completed your portion and "signed off" on it online, it goes back to the school and the school completes their portion.

Go see her again and ask for your login id...

You will have to send scores, but that can wait a little while (not as immediate as the application). You can put undecided for now on the college and figure that out later, too -- you have a chance to change that later (check on deadlines for each school you are considering if they have NMF scholarships).

Yes, you do have to write an essay. You need to do YOUR portion of the NMSF forms. Go back to your GC.

Separately, you need to send your SAT scores to NMCorp....code 0085 Do that NOW before you forget.

You don't need to decide your top school yet.

thank you - just called and Yes she is a commended student, missed the cutoff for semi-finalist by 6 points!! thank you for the info. I don't know why her gc would tell her that -

Thank you for posting the phone number! My son made commended! First time anyone in our whole family has ever received that type of award. They told me the certificated were mailed to the school last Tues (sept 18th). It's up to the school to announce. And they said nothing comes to the house, it goes to the school.

Our school also told the kids to complete their portion by 10/3 which would give them a week to get the school portion completed for the 10/10 deadline. Not sure what the school must do but I told my son to make sure he was ahead of the deadline since there are 8 others from our school & I want to give them plenty of time to complete their portion. All our information came through the principal at our HS not the GC so maybe those who are having trouble with GC can approach the principal since I am pretty sure that is who gets the letters initially. Our school gets an extension because they have so many NMSF. The kids have until 10/24. I wonder how they manage at TJHSST, 146!!!
