@ choirfarm
Yes, if you have no need, you will only get the scholarship.
But for us, for example, a full tuition scholarship would be less than our need, so for us, a full tuition scholarship is useless (except perhaps at state schools that provide little to no financial aid).
So if I'm going to have 10k out of pocket either way, I wouldn't choose a NMF school (more than likely).

S just received a NMF offer in the mail from UTD.
Full tuition and mandatory fees
$8000 cash yearly (presumably to pay for room and board, which is currently guestimated at $8300 for on campus)
$2000 for study abroad (awardable after 2 academic years in residence)

Hello, I'm a high school senior who just received an Oklahoma National Scholars Program scholarship. I'm expected to reply with Yes/No/Maybe soon, before I have a chance to hear from other schools to which I had applied. I would like to reply with a "Maybe".
However, for a "Maybe" they'd like an accompanying explanation. Does anyone have any suggestion how to best "explain" my situation since I would like to wait to hear from most of not all of the schools before making a final decision? At the same time, don't want to alienate the school which has already awarded me a scholarship.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Something seems off about that. Is it a scholarship for national merit? If so, most Oklahoma schools don't need to know your decision till April. The only exception I know of is University of Tulsa, who wants you to name them first choice right away. If you don't they might withhold their scholarship.

Some national merit scholarships do require the student to name the school their first choice earlier than the end of April. Boston University requires March 1, I believe. But the above poster doesn't sound like a NM thing.

Choirfarm quote:
"I thought National merit scholarships were not based on need. We will have no need at all. Wouldn't we just get the scholarship?"
------------------
Keep in mind that scholarships get applied to need, not "family contribution".
So if a school costs 55k
and you have a family contribution of $20k
and you have $25k in "need"
and the school awards a 15k scholarship
then that goes towards "need"...it doesn't go towards the $20k that YOU have to pay
================
Choirfarm.....my post doesn't really apply to you. You'll get whatever merit your child qualifies for.
My post was about those with need. Some think that the student will get need based aid for their "need"....and also get merit which they then can use for their EFC. My point was that any merit gets applied to "need" first....if it covers all need and then cuts into EFC fine (or if you have no need), only then is EFC reduced.
In your case, if cost is $50k and your EFC is $50k, then any merit will reduce what you pay.

I'm not sure if it's National Merit scholarship. It is specifically: Oklahoma academic scholars institutional nominee, apparently sponsored by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. It seems that many of the major OK schools offer this. http://www.okhighered.org/academic-s...gram-rules.pdf Academic Scholars
I think I'm farily certain of its legitimacy, just wondering how to properly respond.
Thanks!

If the school offered you a merit scholarship, it should mean they would really like you to enroll at their school. And if they said an acceptable answer was "maybe", then you should be OK. I think if you are honest and say you were are very interested in that school, but you are waiting to hear back from other schools where you applied regarding acceptance and potential financial aid, then I think there should be no harm done. I would add that as soon as you make a decision you will notify them immediately.
I would caution you to be sure and look into anything on the school's website or on what they sent you regarding their scholarship regarding deadlines, so that you do not wait too long to hear back and miss any required deadlines.

I heard that Carnegie Mellon also gives money for NMF. Is this true? (Applied there as a supposed match school, not sure if I'd go there since they're costly as anything)

I'm not aware of a NMF scholarship program at Carnegie Mellon.

CrazyMomster: So the UTD offer is essentially a full-ride. Have you visited? Any comments on the school? My S (junior with 222 PSAT in GA, so cautiously optimistic about NM) is interested in engineering, and we're visiting Alabama next week. However, UTD also has a good engineering program and, if there are NMSF full-rides available, UTD has the additional advantage that S could potentially play baseball there. Thx.

^ PM sbjdorlo (that might not be quite right, but you'll see her posts around). Her S was just on campus and visited. I have not been on campus, but spent much of my younger years in Dallas and love the city. My S really liked UTD and only took it off the list because he had so many other schools to apply to and for a full ride school he preferred UA - Birmingham (neuroscience and bioengineering and immediate research).
What kind of engineering is your S interested in?
Yes, the UTD offer is essentially a free ride (even more than Alabama as UA doesn't cover food, but the UTD offer covers room and board with the $8000 yearly cash, with the exception of about $300).
Also talk to sbjdorlo about the baseball, she may have some answers for you on that too.
Also Pitt (a strong engineering school) "freely" offers full tuition scholarships for high stat early applicants (like apply in September). They also have a competitive full ride, but currently the SAT scores would need to be 1550 for M/CR to be eligible for nomination. They also offer engineering scholarships, on top of the tuition.

Thanks CMster. He does not know about kind of engineering, just looking for best direction for his math/sci interests.
