My understanding musicquest is that if you receive the scholarship, you don't have to accept it. In my daughter's case, if she was offered the one-time $2500 scholarship, she would not accept it if she chose a NMSC school but would accept it if she chose a non-participating NMSC. But, I'm on this board trying to figure this all out just like you.

My understanding

1. Any NMS award will go to your account at the college you finally decided (5/1/2010)
2. If you have a corporate sponsor, you should have been noticed already (like my D)
3. Or you will get a notice for $2,500 from NMSC by now (Or oops, sorry)
4. Can you notice NMSC if you need to change your college choice by 5/1/2010
5. If your school offers you any scholarship, they will tell you if it's related to NMS and how much. (example from other post, if school portion is $1,000 total for NMS, you will get addition $1,500 from NMSC. Another example like SMU, they will give NMS as full tuition&fee less the resident tuition&fee of your state university, then you will not get any addition from NMSC)
6. If your school offers you other type of merit scholarship (not linked to NMSC), you will get the full corporate or NMSC ($2,500) even if you have full ride scholarship (8 semesters). You can use extra money in your account of summer programs.

I believe that the notifications for the $2500 awards have just been mailed this week so the recipients of those might not have received those letters yet.

Don't worry. As long as she names her top choice school she's fine. The scholarship office at the college will now how to deal with this. Call them if you have questions.

Got mine today! It was for MIT, though, where I was rejected... I need to change my top school choice.

So if I haven't gotten a letter by now, does that mean I am not one of the recipients of the $2500 scholarship?

My son just got a scholarship offer from a corporate sponsor through National Merit. I wasn't aware that you could get such a thing if you were not an employee of these corporations.

I received mine today (GA).

To be eligible for college-sponsored scholarships, we have to turn the NM $2500 down, correct? It feels so weird to pass up free money.
