HwtDad, The nursing part will help him but the weight issue will hurt him. There is a LOT of running(for miles),push-ups,sit-ups etc. involved in NROTC. There are physical tests that must be passed. There are times/reps. that they have to make. It's different than football. Both my S's played h.s football. S1 (linebacker) got NROTC scholarship. He was/is dedicated to running, lifting, working out.
If your S is serious about NROTC (and his football playing days are over), he should start distance running to shed some pounds and maximize his chances for NROTC scholarship.
A guy interested in nursing should give him an advantage as long as he is fit enough to pass the PFT.
