I agree that it seems surprising with that PSAT score unless you're from the greater DC area! My son's was a 197 and he was accepted the first day they started sending them out. If nothing else, once you start the real application process and are working with your B&G officer, I'd have him check back into it and find out why you didn't get in, so at least you know what area they're looking for you to improve in.

CLARIFICATION
Just want to remind everyone to keep the following in mind as those NASS selections come out:
1. There are many factors in the decision as to who gets selected to NASS. Geography has a lot to do with it- as does your MOC district. It may prove easier to get an invitation from a state in the mid-west, than from a state on the east coast where USNA is better known. Also, the USNA looks for applicants from MOC districts where few apply to the academy, in order to stir interest.
2. NASS can be a 2-way sword. Do well, and it will be noted. Do poorly, and that will be noted too. You need to keep that in mind, and more importantly, you need to go prepared to do your best. Get physically prepared starting now, if you have not already done so. There is a lot of physical stuff, including lots and lots of running- so get a pair of running shoes and start running now.
3. Around 60% of the eventual appointees to the USNA will NOT have attended NASS. Some who do attend NASS may even decide USNA is not a good fit for them.
4. The message here is that this is not the end of the road by any means!! NOT AT ALL!!! If you opt to not pursue your application based on a "no go" to NASS it would be a big mistake!

My son still hasn't heard about SS and applied on Feb. 1. Should we assume he has no chance of going?

I would contact them. I thought most decisions were out by now and that you would have heard one way or the other, especially applying that early. Maybe a spam filter caught it? The latest email we got from them told us not to contact admissions directly, but our liaison for the region. The contacts were:
Region One: Northeastern United States:

| I haven't gotten anything
Alright, I know I didn't get into the summer seminar- but I haven't received ANYTHING from the academy. I know they got my application because I received a confirmation email, but I have yet to get a response on my rejection.
Anyone else in this spot? Air Force also didn't send me anything...

My son was rejected -- letter received by snail mail end of April. He applied at 8:15 a.m. on February 1 hoping to boost his chances -- he was told that acceptances are given on a rolling basis. Unfortunately, we live in Maryland, and from what I understand, his rejection had a lot to do with our location. Just after the letter came, we got a call from his blue-and-gold officer who just wanted to make sure he did not get discouraged from continuing his application to the Academy, which he will, but he's bummed nonetheless. Anyone else get rejected? :-{

Our son wasn't selected for Summer Seminar either. It was the "Big Thing" he was hoping to do this summer, so he was very disappointed. But he is still determined to pursue an appointment to the USNA and is continuing to work hard towards that goal.

I can't emphasize enough to keep the positive attitude -- and pass along to your sons and daughters -- that the goal is NOT to go to Summer Seminar, but to be there at I-Day/R-Day. There are many reasons, as stated above and elsewhere each year, for not getting selected for NASS, including a big one: where you happen to live. Continue to work on those things that will get you an appointment. My son WAS accepted to NASS 08, but not to the USAFA summer seminar the same year. Then he got a USNA Foundation Scholarship but declined because he also got an appointment to USAFA (but remember, he did NOT get the USAFA ss) -- and his I-day is 42 days away. Remember the broader objective -- getting, or NOT getting NASS is not a final determinant of your appointment prospects! Good luck!

I know you are absolutely right, RaptorDad! To be honest, I think I have a harder time moving on than my son does. We mommies want so much for our kids -- haha. My son is excited about another seminar he was selected for, so I'll focus on that and working on his applications and essays this summer.

Cronusmom- We live in Maryland also and our son was rejected a few years back but the week before the third session was to begin he received a phone call from the academy asking if he could attend which he accepted. Only draw back was he had no time to prepare physically but he did just fine and had a great time and is attending at USNA class of 2011. So keep the fingers crossed and just maybe you will get a last minute phone call but if not its not the end of the world Good Luck to your son.

That's awesome, Srhcasper! I'll let my son know. I guess if someone drops out they start making calls to fill the slot. He'll take it. Thankfully, our son is an serious distance runner (even in the Maryland humid heat), so he's got that going for him.

Yep, srhcasper is correct, u can still get accepted AND acceptance letters are still going out. I was wait-listed at first and I got my acceptance email/letter last week but unfortunately I made other plans and now I can't go. So I hope my spot goes to another deserving applicant (I'm from SoCal though)

My son was accepted for the 3rd session but is not really sure what he should be working on physically. He is a very in-shape ice hockey player and trains all summer for that but does not know if he should prepare for the actual Candidate Fitness Assessment or just for the Physical Readiness Test. Any suggestions?
