| Appointments
Congressmen and Senators can each have as many as 5 "designated" appointees attending the Academy at any given time, i.e. appointments sort of "credited" to their account. However they may be additional appointees from districts and states. I recall one poster noting they had something like 7 or 8 appointments in a given year from her district. Unusual, exceptional, possible, if not probable.
Still, it's not random. Geographic representation remains central.
Others will expand on this, I trust, but in the end you'll come back to 2 issues, I suspect:
1. 5 appointments enrolled / MOC (and there are 3 various ways these officials may submit nominees ...a. principal and ranked w/ up to 10 noms/available slot b. principal and unranked c. unranked allowing the Academy the pick(s) of the litter. And there may be more than one selected from the 10 nominees, in which case, only one is debited from the MOC account )
2. Beyond that it becomes complex, mysterious, and difficult to discern among novices
But really what you need to know? See #1.

Members of Congress (US Reps and US Senators) do not appoint. They NOMINATE.
You should apply to each of your 3 MOC's for a Nomination. You can find their nomination application and requirements on their websites. If you haven't begun this process and you are a high school senior you need to start pronto. Many deadlines are approaching.
The law allows each MOC to have 5 mids in attendance at any one time. This roughly works out to one appointment each year. The MOC is allowed to submit to the academy a list of 10 names for each appointment slot available.
Aim to win a nomination.

| Naval Preparatory Academy
After reading this article Naval Academy prep school head relieved • Naval Academy (www.HometownAnnapolis.com - The Capital). I am convince that a back up plan to get into the Naval Academy would be wise from experiences. How do I get in? I read some where that everyone is automatically considered for the preparatory academy for applying or is it for people who got nominated? Can someone clarify? By the way, I crunched some numbers to see if I can afford to attend the naval academy summer seminar this coming summer. According to my calculation, I can afford it if I can get a room for the night before and after the 1 week seminar.

david,
I would suggest contacting the local chapter of the Navy League or perhaps you can find a local USNA Alumni group. Either might sponsor your trip to SS. Your B&G Officer might also be able to help steer you in the right direction. https://www.usna.com/SSLPage.aspx?pid=433 |

David,
You don't apply to NAPS. If you are not considered for an appointment to the Naval Academy you are automatically considered for an appointment to NAPS. NAPS is primarily for students who they feel are physically and medically qualified but need some help academically. Also, it's for prior enlisted and some athletes as well. NAPS is a one year program that helps develop midshipmen candidates prepare for the academic rigors of life @ the Academy.

| Thank You so much, but one more question
Research: I read somewhere that MOC, and Senators are allowed only to have a maximum of 5 students from their region to the Naval Academy at a time.
The question is what happens if a new Member of Congress gets elected in the district and the previous Member of Congress had already 5 students at the Academy. Does this means for that year, the MOC can't nominate anyone to the academy or does the MOC gets 5 new slots to send 5 bright students to the academy? Because apparently, there was a special election in my district because Obama appointed Hilda Solis, the previous MOC, to U.S. Secretary of Labor this year.

Its 5 max per Congressional District not by who's occupying the seat.

It was pointed out in another thread that one of the issues is a new MoC might not have his staff or system in place to make the nominations. I can imagine for a newly elected MoC academy nominations are not the first thing on the agenda following swearing in. In that case the academys may step into the void.

This is my most likely extracurricular activities throughout my entire High School Leadership positions. My chance to become President of FBLA is 0% now because my opponent has gained the needed officer votes to automatically become President no matter what. But I will still run for it in case the opponent gets sick on that day and loses by default.
The last update is my Senior year class schedule

David, plenty of young Democrats and even -- brace yourself -- out-and-out liberals attend the Academy. I bet some of them were among those who hugged the POTUS @ Commencement last June.

david ...lighten up. jk. Indeed, and to the amazement of many, as NCmammy notes ...there are even a few closeted libs. They're usually assigned operating the beauty parlor and McDonalds on carriers. And indeed, they are the ones PDAing POTUS. |

| Alternatives
I currently have no contact with my BGO from my region. I am wondering what are some alternatives to the Naval Preparatory School in case I don't get into the Naval Preparatory School.
Plan A: Naval Academy
Plan B: Naval Preparatory School
Plan C: Are there any other successful preparatory School in California?
