What does the 97 GPA mean? I am a junior and made many mistakes in deciding what to take, but if I were to restart and do everything over again from the beginning of high school. The following things is what I would do from scratch or primary focus on. I am going to act like an Asian parent from what I have learned so far, but had I did what I am saying, I would be much more competitive than I currently am.
Get a academic 4.0 GPA, don't take the courses you THINK is fun. just the basic honor math, science, and English class. Everything else should be regular if possible. This way, you don't overburden yourself. Really! so if you come to a fork in the road between a 3.5 gpa and officer of a club or just a regular member of the club and 4.0. Go with the 4.0 GPA. the positions from most clubs are really overrated. Personally I never cheated on any classes, but there will be times where it will be tempting, especially when half the class is cheating. Don't try and justify it! Karma and Justice will prevail.
join and stay in Cross Country and Track for all four years. get that co-captain or captain if possible. Its okay if you don't become captain. It is being in varsity that counts.
get that 1600 SAT score without including the writing score if possible, (Math + verbal) take the online SAT course at college board if there isn't one. it costs about $60. its a very flexible course.
Join Key club, National Honor Society, and Debate.
Side note, Debate is like a double edge sword depending on the school. It was a double edge sword at my school. Everyone has to pay a upfront $200 fee, so if the economy contracts and your parents loses their ability to pay it. yea.... nonetheless, debate is a great thing to be in even if it is one year. I matured a lot after 1 year. And if you actually do debate. Don't waste your time with the "exotic and interesting" events. Just do Student Congress, Extemporaneous speeches, and oa or oo, original advocacy, original oratory. Everything else is a "b.s." event. Time efficiency is important here. You want to make decisions on the value deal. Don't go cheap or obsesses about the best. In between is the way to go.
preferably take as many math, and science classes.
take honor/AP English too.
Geometry honor, Algebra 2 honor, Trigonometry/precal honor, ap Calculus for math.
take chemistry honor, ap chemistry, and ap physics for science
English honor and ap.
And while you are at it. Sign up at your community college the math class you are expecting to take next year. Trust me on this. If you do, You are going to love math, or it will be so much easier. That 4.0 will be a lot easier with 1 less class to seriously learn about. It will be more of a review and it will give you a strong foundation in math. You don't want to end up in your senior taking AP calculus and say" boy do i wish I remember was that thing again in trigonometry". A strong foundation is what you want. Not a wobbly foundation.
those would be what i would do if i could redo everything.
all you got to do is really evaluate yourself and decide how to make yourself competitive. research what the naval academy is looking for and mold yourself into what they are looking for. Everyone graduates from the naval academy with an engineering degree so math, and science classes are important. You don't want to get into the academy and end up washing out.
I may have made many unwise decisions in my life, but there is still time to fix it for you and me. Don't give up!
Don't worry about the nomination yet. It will only end up hurting you right now if you think too much about it instead of the obstacle in front of you.
p.s. One last thing, QUALITY over quantity. I don't know how to emphasis this enough.
