Your stats certainly look good and the NA thought so too or you wouldn't have been invited to SS. That said, the academy is receiving applications at a pace well above normal so more qualified applicants will not get appointments than in other years.

I don't think your family background matters - unless a parent was a Medal of Honor recipient.

Have you applied for nominations from your Sen's and Rep? If not, get on it, deadlines are probably just around the corner.

Good luck.

OSDAD has it correct, your family background has no real basis here. One thing that might be helpful is if your dad had a min of 8yrs active service (I believe that is correct). If so then you would be eligible for a Presidential Nomination (keep in mind only 100 candidates can be appointed w/ a Presidential Nom which is why it's important to still continue w/ the process of receiving an appointment via your senator or congressman).

Certainly get your applications into your Sen/Congressmen asap (most Senators application deadline was 1 Oct). Check out their websites to confirm what is required for your application package and when the deadline is - but your resume does look fairly strong.

It is not quite this simple. Presidential nominations are reserved for children of 'career' military officers and enlisted. Eight years of active duty alone will not suffice. For active duty, they must either be still on active duty or retired. For reserves, it is slightly more complicated. Unfortunately the online catalog which explains reserve eligibility in detail is being revised and is not available.

The reason that MOC nominations are so important is that only they can nominate 10 candidates for each opening. It is solely from these excess MOC nominations that the 'national pool' is filled. A VP, ROTC, or Presidential nominee unsuccessful for a 'primary' nomination is not eligible for this pool, from which a substantial portion of each class is filled.

Mombee, thank you for the clarification. I didn't have my handbook on hand and I couldn't remember where that 8yrs service fit. To clarify on my comment, and this is directly from my BGO training guide on Nominations:

A Presidential Nom can go to:
- A candidate who's parent is currently on Active Duty, OR retired from Active Duty w/ pay.
- On reserve duty w/ a min of 8yrs service (2880 pts) or be eligible or drawing retired pay.

Duke73 ~ I just wanted to let you know that there are other types of nominations that you may be eligible for and we (BGOs) highly encourage any candidates to apply for all nomination sources they are eligible for - check out the USNA website USNA Admissions Home and you should find plenty of information on nomination process and types of nominations as well as POC numbers if you have a question.

Best of luck to you!

duke: Great stats. However, the answer is ALWAYS "It depends." It depends upon who else is applying this year and their stats. And, even more important, who is applying from your MOC's area (state, congressional district) and what their stats are.

All you can do is all you can do. Make your app the best it can be and the chips will fall as they may.

Good luck!

Your chances are good. Both of my siblings are at USNA and one had much lower stats than you. Good luck
