NROTC scholarship

Hi, I'm a junior interested in USNA and USMA and some NROTC/ROTC schools. I have a few questions about NROTC but I think they apply to ROTC as well.

If I apply for my scholarships by..lets say the beginning of August. Would I hear back with enough time so I wouldn't have to apply to the schools where I don't receive a scholarship?

Both the NROTC and ROTC the websites say to apply to 5 schools for the scholarship. I'm only interested in 2 NROTC and 2 ROTC schools. Do I have to add 3 more schools for the scholarship process? If I do, am I obligated to actually apply to those schools? Like if I get the scholarship to the schools I don't plan to attend, can I just reject it?

If you are fortunate enough to receive a NROTC scholarship it will be to one school on your list. The Navy will decide. If you want to take a chance that the one school is the same as the one you want to apply to, then of course that is your decision. Keep in mind that the NROTC application requires that you list at one (2?) state schools.

The Army will approve you for UP TO five schools on your list. Sometimes all five, sometimes none. You should (IMHO) list as many schools as you are willing to attend (preferably five).

As for the time line for approval. The NROTC & AROTC scholarship boards meet about every 4-8 weeks beginning in October. Depending on which (if any) board approves your scholarship and when your applications to your colleges are due, will determine whether you HAVE TO apply to schools where you don't receive a scholarship.

Free advice: These scholarships are getting more competitive . There seems to be less money in the military budgets for them, and more applicants competing for them. Do NOT over think the process. List five schools on each application, complete your application as soon as possible (August is good), and apply to every one of the five schools on your applications (even if you don't want to attend) as soon as they will accept your application.

After you (hopefully) get your offers from the USNA, NROTC, USMA & AROTC, you can sort out your options and decide which one you want.

    Good Luck!

Son was only interested in Texas A&M last year. But you had to put five schools on the app. Wouldn't take it with any less than five. YOu don't hae to apply to five schools. ut you are taking a chance! Thank goodness he got in to USNA as he was awarded NROTC scholarship to Rice, where he didn't apply!

The exact same thing happened to our son this year, Rangelady! Same schools and everything.

S applied for a NROTC scholarship in 2004. He listed five schools but only applied to his top two choices. He really wanted to go to our big state u. (his first choice) and said that if he didn't get assigned to that unit, he would just go there,do ROTC without the scholarship and then apply for it again once in the unit.
Luckily, he got assigned to his first choice and it all worked out well.

If you wish to apply, follow the directions, live up to your word, you do acknowledge within the application to NROTC that you will apply to 5 schools -
    what about honor? charactor? honesty?
    Good luck!

when i applied back in 2006-07, i submitted my package in early september...didnt hear back until late march, so in all likeliehood, get ready for the waiting game...also, if you get a scholarship to a school on your list that isnt your 1st choice, at least when i went through, it wasnt too tough to switch it to your number one, a few phone calls to the nrotc people and the unit and it was done :). it may be harder now to do that with the whole financial situation though...good luck

My son completed his NROTC application in time for the first Board which convened the week of August 23rd, 2010. He has been checking his application status online, with no information yet. Just wondering if anyone who applied by the first deadline has heard anything and if not, when do you hear? Also, will his application automatically be advanced to the next Board if not selected first round? Thanks!

Rumor has it that the August NROTC scholarship board did not happen. No one (on a few well known forums), including extremely well qualified applicants to the USNA has received a scholarship notification yet.

Yes, your son (and mine) will meet the next board and each subsequent board until the Navy runs out of scholarships. Let's hope that our sons get selected early so we can make some college decisions! Good Luck!

Thanks aglages for your reply. Any rumors as to why they didn't convene? Also, do you know anything about the procedure to change one of the five selected schools on the application at this stage? We realized that Holy Cross is a long shot after submitting his application. He hurried up a bit to be ready for that August 23rd deadline. My son's recruiter is new to this and has not been able to answer all questions. Good luck to your son, too! Has he applied to all five schools already? My son has only completed one!

    ^^
Lots of rumors, but no concrete information.
I'd write the NROTC people to ask your question about changing schools. Is Holy Cross in your top 3? If not I'd not bother changing it. I'll PM you the address that I have for the NROTC.
Yes, my son has finished all his applications.

Thanks for the email info. Yes, Holy Cross is in top 3. Spoke with my son's recruiter this a.m. and it was confirmed the Aug. 23rd Board did not convene. Some sort of scheduling conflict because another selection board ran long. He said the Board was scheduled to begin last Monday or today, wasn't sure. Also, he said that the web site will post status before any written notification would arrive.

My experience last year with my daughter was that the DoDMERB site was the first indication of a scholarship award. The following is a link to another site where many parents of ROTC hopefuls post. It may provide some insight/help to you in the process. Good luck and thanks for the latest information about the August NROTC board.

Wondering if anyone has heard whether or not the Navy ROTC board convened for 2011 applicants?
