cas/stern double major

I was under the impression that you couldnt do a CAS/Stern double major, but on the Stern bulletin board they say:

"If you know you want to major in some business field, you must apply to Stern. There is no way to double major in Stern if your home school is CAS. But, you can possibly double major in CAS if you are a Stern student"

It's true.

It's the same situation as double majoring at Tisch and CAS. You must be enrolled in Stern in order to double major in CAS. You can't do it the other way around.

hold on a second. As far as I know, you CANNOT double major outside of Stern. I had quite a few friends come in thinking you could for the same reason you cited, then they found out they could only double in Stern and minor in CAS. Unless they changed the policy (I know Blount-Lyon is trying to get the other schools (especially Tisch and Stienhardt) to open up more classes to Stern students, as of right now you're stuck in Stern. One option you can do is say you took the credits in CAS for a double major, but it won't show up on your diploma.

I concur with Cardinal. Maybe things have changed at NYU since I graduated, but at that time Stern students could not have CAS majors, they were only allowed minors I believe.

When that post on the NYU board said it was possible to double major in CAS, I think it was talking about the fact that it is possible for a Stern student to major in econ. (which after all is a CAS dept. that is shared by students from both schools)....outside of econ., I have not known of any Stern students to major in CAS subjects.

Again, its possible things have changed, but this is from what I know.

jwblue, well this is one thing that has obviously changed since you graduated. I have a friend in Stern who's a junior and he's double majoring in CAS, and it's not in Econ.

Hmmmm...this doesn't make sense. Since I rarely ever pay attention to nor really care for administrative stuff like this, I'm open to the possibility that things have changed, but here is what the Stern school says about it as of right now (I'm assuming this is accurate, its for the class of '08):

Q: Can I complete a major within the College of Arts & Sciences?

A: Stern students may only major within Stern. However, Stern students may minor (except for economics) within the College of Arts & Sciences. (CAS)

Check out:
http://w4.stern.nyu.edu/emplibrary/FAQ_for_Freshmen.pdf

Then of course there is the example of matth's friend who seems to contradict this established rule...so I think the best thing for anyone interested in this to do, is ask the Stern school directly (the school itself, not the admissions office). FYI, on non-admissions related matters, I would not take everything the admissions bulletin board says as 100% correct since these are areas that are out of the admissions office's realm, and thus the bulletin board may not be infallible.
