| There's a Media, Communications, and Culture major in the Steinhardt School (of Culture, Education, and Human Development), and from what I gather from several of my friends in the major, they really like it...you should visit the NYU website for specific classes Steinhardt kids have to take.
As far as chances, your GPA as you know is high, your SATs are ok, and your ACT is a litttle on the low side for NYU, but does the trick (the average SAT scores are between 29-31). Your essay and recs could be the balance tipper for you. If you were applying to Stern, I'd be like...eh, not sure...but for Steinhardt you have a possibility. This, once again, is only my opinion which was formed based on my observations...don't stress out too much trying to interpret it. If you're ED, there's nothing you can do now lol...good luck! |

| Hey, I applied to Tisch ED as a musical theater major. I know the Cap 21 studio is the hardest to get into. At the interview I said Strasberg was my second choice. I'm worried that if I get put into a non-musical theater studio I won't be able to work on my voice at all. Do you know any reactions from people who auditioned for Cap 21 and didn't make it? |

| To thatsmekevin:
Well, being male will probably help, since more females than males apply to NYU, and being first generation college student may help if you can somehow weave that into your essay. But being Asian PROBS won't help out, especially since the school as a whole is like 27% Asian I think...Asians are definitely not a minority at NYU.
To coolrena:
I'm not sure about the exact statistics, but I know that film is hard to get into...I know that definitely not more than 20% are accepted, but the number is most likely closer to 10-15%. Although it's not as hard as the grad program (they accept just 5% of applicants), NYU Tisch Film Undergrad is only second to USC (or so I've heard), and so of course as you know it's extremely competitive. I think there's like 150 film freshmen (anyone can correct this if I'm wrong).
To cmkundin:
Well, you're in luck, because I did audition for CAP 21 as my first choice and Strasberg was my second...and I got Strasberg. And honestly, my voice really has gotten so much better since I've gone to Strasberg, because I've learned not to be afraid to use it...and my singing teacher (we have studio singing for two hours every week) is kicking my a**, to the point of annoyance. But that's ok. Even though I'm still pondering switching out of Strasberg, today we had singing juries and, at least in my year, there really are some amazing voices, and I'm not just saying that...voices definitely good enough to be in CAP. The only thing that I really miss is dance (we only get 2 hours of ballet a week...next semester it's only two hours of jazz)...but you can always take extra dance classes in the city. Also, Tisch Drama has a private voice elective that you have a really good chance of making once you're a sophomore (freshmen get last priority when it comes to electives). The only classes I really don't like this year are Tai Chi (not the teacher, just the class itself), and Stanislavsky to Strasberg (a two-hour theatre history class, which is just a teacher lecturing...zzzz....). But those are just freshmen classes anyway. So...I still personally have a lot to think about, but if you are aspiring to do musical theatre, you can definitely do so in Strasberg. Strasberg just got finished doing A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and in junior year Strasberg has a full musical theatre track. Strasberg also, as an acting studio, focuses heavily on acting, and so you'd get a powerful basis here. But, besides dance, which I actually do miss a lot, I feel that Strasberg really does prepare you for anything as a theatre and film institute (be it musical theatre, film acting, stage acting), moreso than any other studio (sorry, only my opinion, don't get offended anyone haha...Playwrights is also pretty good for everything prep as well, they just have a lot more tech related stuff than we do, but that's also ok). You'll have an amazing experience either way in the NY, and your voice will definitely be worked on if you're admitted to either Strasberg or CAP. You can PM me or put on this board any more specific questions. |

| I spend about $50 a week on average...but that includes transportation to and from my job, and going out (I HATE having to pay $11 for a movie).
I think you have a good chance of getting in. As you probably know, your African-American male, 1st generation status does help you out a lot. Though your ACT score is on the low end (I had a 28...the 24 on Math really screwed me haha), you were able to overcome adversity and trials in your life that, let's face it, many NYU applicants did not have to face. Your GPA is also on the low end, but you do make up for it through AP and I even think SAT II scores. You should be fine...I'd say you have a very good chance of making at least GSP.
But be sure to look at outside scholarships as well. It's too late for Gates Millennium, but try other outlets...you never know how NYU's financial aid will work out, even for you. But you should be fine financially, I think. I was (my family comprises of a single mother, $30,000 income, and four children, including me, and NYU, at least compared to everyone else's financial aid packages, was very generous to me). |

| To uskoolfish: It is said that Steinhardt musical theatre is for singers who also act and dance. Steinhardt's MT program is very good for those who just want to focus on voice but have the other MT elements as well. I'm not sure about specific classes, but I do know that Steinhardt MT majors go for the BM degree, meaning you will also have more classes in music theory and keyboarding, for instance, than those in CAP 21 in Tisch. There's sooo many jokes that go on between both Steinhardt and Tisch MTers...from my experiences with students in both schools, it appears both groups think they're better than each other (overall)...but it's all in good fun, I guess. The people that I know in Steinhardt's MT program love it and, of course, it is well known in the professional world. Both CAP 21 in Tisch and Steinhardt MT do shows all the time, independent of each other. And as far as test scores and requirements, it's probably the same for both schools, since both, as audition programs, are equally really competitive. Hope that helps! |

| I already have a thread in the chance forum, but a second opinion would be appreciated. What are my chances of getting into Stern with these stats? Also, does SAT scores look better than ACT scores that are equivalent? The NYU website does not seem to mention ACT scores much.
-junior, first generation chinese male from Alabama
-Class Rank 30/694
-GPA unweighted: 4.0
-GPA weighted: 4.3
Test Scores
