@hello

competitive chances, just try to distinguish yourself in the essay, because on paper you kind of sound like every other Stern applicant. no offense. just rock the essay!

international student are scrutinized more. you are not eligible for financial aid. the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at NYU is very highly regarded. you need to raise your critical reading SAT score, and i would suggest submitting three SAT IIs. international students are fighting an uphill battle and i'm not quite sure how to "chance" you. :-(

lol, welcome to the insanity that is CC.

1) yes, ED students get a little bit more aid, but not much more. our financial aid sucks. a lot. A LOT. but things get iffy with ED and financial aid. . . if you really need significant aid, i would apply regular because then you can compare financial aid with other colleges and ask for more aid.

2) no, NYU takes both and considers both equally because they like applicants from all over the US.

a) NYU will reweight your GPA according to their standards, but 94/95 is good. (New Yorker here, i hate the 100/100 grading scale now, lol.)

b) CAS doesn't admit by major, so they don't ~really~ care what the major is on your application.

c) your ACT is a little above average (avg is 29-31)

overall, i feel like you have a fighting chance. if you can, i would recommend taking another SAT II that you would do well in because that Lit score is good.

I am interested in applying to NYU Gallatin.

Stats:
- Male
- Suburb of Boston, MA
- rising senior
- my high school sends some grads to top schools (depends on what you consider "some" and what you consider "top schools). My school has sent students to Boston College, Boston University, NYU, Oberlin, Occidental College, Cornell, Tufts, Swarthmore, Wellesley, etc.
- GPA: 93.3 unweighted / no weighted GPA
- class rank: 47/386 = 12.2% (will most likely [if not definitely] be within the top 10% next year as I'm taking twice as many AP courses and the level of our courses is the only thing that influences our class rank)
- SATs CR/M/W: 660/610/710 = 1980
- I haven't taken the SAT IIs yet, will be taking them in English and French
- I have only received one rec yet and it was amazing, but it will most likely be used as an additional rec because it is from my singing teacher.
- My essay is not completed, but I've been told the beginning I have is great

ECS:
- Amnesty International
- National Honor Society
- Philosophy Club
- Select Choir
- Future Teachers of America

Outside Interests:
- Regional Select Choir
- Foreign exchange: 2 weeks in France
- award-winning photography for Enterprise Bank
- writing and photography are published in school's literary magazine
- piano lessons
- peaceful protest in Boston ("The Rescue")
- Schools for Schools organization
- member of a group dedicated to bringing free, safe fun to the city of Boston
- personal blog
- write on a Philosophy Forum with members of my Philosophy Club (Philosophy Club was discontinued, so we use this instead)

Scholastic Honors:
- Honors Award ("summa")
- 6 student recognition awards

Leadership:
I'm one of the most active members in my Amnesty International Club, I am a volunteer French teacher, and next year I will hopefully be Chief Editor of my school's writing center program that helps students with their essays. Unfortunately for me, the activities that I do have little "leadership positions". I do what I like, though.

Volunteer Services:
- teaching French to elementary school students (80+ hours)
- National Honor Society English tutor (? hours)
- Writing Center program (? hours)
- Community Day

Employment:
- none so far

Future:
- I plan on taking voice lessons senior year
- I plan on volunteering at a French library in Boston
- I plan on retaking the SATs at least one more time and hopefully raising my score to over 2000, but who knows :P
- Taking the SAT IIs in the fall

+:
With my applications I am planning on submitting a recording of my singing, a CD with examples of my photography, and possibly ONE additional rec from my voice teacher
I'm also first generation.

@missamericanpie thank you! that is definitely encouraging. I have a question though: with the new standardized test policy, can I choose to only have them see my ACT scores? From what I've read, I thought that an applicant chooses the test scores that he or she wants to send.

This is a dream school of mine, I think I'm a long long long shot, so I'd like to know if I have ANY chance at all. I might apply ED if it helps. I would still be ecstatic to get into GSP.

Weighted GPA: 3.2
SAT I: 750 CR 750 Math 730 Writing (2230 total)
SAT II: History 690, Biology 690

Basically, my soph grades are mediocre (around 3.4 weighted average), then it took a complete nose-dive first sem of junior year (4 Cs, 2 Ds) and second semester I recovered some whilst still taking the same classes (4.0 Weighted average).

APs Taken (# is grade I got on AP test)/To Take Senior Year (S):
AP Biology (4)
AP English Comp (5)
AP U.S History (4)
AP English Lit (S)
AP Environmental Science (S)
AP Art History (S)

Average Extracirric/Outside Interests:

-Founded a charity to raise money to fund music lessons for inner city kids; hosted a fairly successful benefit concert.
-2 years Academic Decathalon
-Played guitar in a band for 4 years, played at venues like the Whisky Agogo in Hollywood
-About 50-75 hours of volunteer
-Employed in Retail for a few months
-Did two sports freshman/sophomore year (don't think this counts for anything because I was on JV both sports both years)

@im

your stats are solid (SATs are a little low? what's the 610 in?).

Gallatin's number one concern is that your concentration is something you are PASSIONATE IN. hit the essay out of the park. seriously. they want to see that you are driven (and on paper, you do seem driven) but they also want to see that you are academically independent.

@natalie

stats look really good. but you can't apply as an IR major right off the bat. it's an Honors major. you need to major in something else. but CAS doesn't admit by major anyway. you would have to major in Politics.

NYU > Politics > International Relations Undergraduate Program

@ohno

what's your unweighted? NYU reweights the grades of applicants before they go in front of the committee. if it's below 3.0. . . :-/.

the rest of your application looks solid, and the SATs are great, but the fact that you got those grades the first semester junior year is kind of worrying.

i don't know what the current stats of people who get LSP'd are, honestly.

does NYU put a lot of weight on course load? because i skipped 2 grades of math and will be submitting a 5 on BC calc (taken junior year). will that help my application a lot, or is it still the same as every other stern applicant?

@hello

lots of Stern applicants take BC Calc. but if that's the more "rigorous" courseload there is, it'll look fine.

I am a white female from a good private school in FL. 4 graduates from the class of 2009 are going to NYU this year. I want to apply ED to CAS. I will not be requesting financial aid if that makes any difference.

GPA (UW): 3.8
GPA (W): I have no idea, but it must be higher. I thought the 3.8 was my weighted GPA, but my councilor told me recently that was actually UW
ACT: 31 C (30 S, 30 R, 34 V, 29 M, 9 essay)
SAT: 1340/2040 (690 M, 650 CR, 700 W)
Rank: School does not rank

Senior courses:
AP Environmental Science
AP Calc AB
AP Mod. Euro
AP Eng. Lit
H Statistics
Religion in pop culture

Clubs: (weak area)
3 years French club- no position held
3 years Writing tutor- director of tutor training
2 years student government- elected rep.
1 year diversity club- only club I did freshman year, idk if I will include
80 hours community service- most at animal shelter and tutoring papers

Recs- 1 teacher will be amazing, 1 good but may be more impersonal, great councilor rec

Employment- worked 2 summers as a file clerk

Other- I have an upward trend through high school. No honors classes fresh. year, 1 sophmore, and 3 junior year. I could not take APs until senior year. I also have one C from spanish 3.
