official CHANCES thread for 2014

(omg, i can't believe it's the class of 2014 already!)

i've been seeing a lot of individual chances threads lately, so i think one giant massive thread of doom is in order.

for the new people to the forum:

i'm Miss American Pie, a rising senior at NYU who works in the Student Resource Center. i'm a Steinhardt communications major. i transferred here in '08, but i'm pretty well versed in NYU. i started contributing to this board because i was bored in class, but i really just love NYU and i like helping people.

standard disclaimer: we're not admissions committees, we're not psychics, we're students with too much time on our hands.

to maintain some order, please @ reply to the person you're talking to.

all schools are welcome here, from Sternies to Tischies to CASer to SCPS, those kooky Gallatin students and my fellow Steinhardts.

everyone knows the drill.

PLEASE make sure to put all pertinent information, INCLUDING what school -and- major you intend on applying to.

good luck to everyone!

- Miss A

I must add to Miss A's post that if you are posting your SAT scores, post math and reading only as NYU does not look at the writing score.

they do look at writing, they just don't give it an equal weight.

^I know you'd rather do Stern ED, but if you do CAS Econ ED I'd say you're pretty much in.

With the way you're planning to apply, I'd say you're a low reach.

well i've been to a couple NYU open houses/events and every time they said they do look at writing but don't give it an equal weight.

Quote:
How much weight does NYU place on the writing score?

Some, but not much. Even though we have writing scores for the last few entering classes, we don't have as much information as we would like to have before we start using the writing scores in our evaluations. Once we have some experience with this part of the SAT Reasoning Test, we will have a better idea of how we will use it in our selection process. But for the coming year, we do not plan to place significant emphasis on the writing score.

But will a poor score on the writing section hurt my chances for admission?

Admission to NYU is highly selective, and a poor score will hurt your chances for admission, just as poor grades in your high school courses will hurt your chances for admission. However, as indicated above, we will not be placing a great deal of emphasis on the writing section, and exactly how much a poor writing score would impact the admissions decision in your particular case would depend on all of the other information in your file. Keep in mind that the score on the writing section is simply a single score on a single examination that is considered in a review process that considers many other factors. No student applying for admission in 2010 will be denied admission solely on the basis of the score on the writing section of the SAT.
(taken off of NYU's website)

i think it's safe to say that you shouldn't bomb the writing section.

@ stephennn

Yeah you must be right, my apologies.

However, I would like to say I was misinformed. I was LSP'd (but now I am luckily in CAS thanks to extra spaces) and I thought I was a decent applicant so I called and spoke to the admissions counselor with my file to find out why I was placed in LSP and not CAS.The counselor said my 2020 wasn't counted and it was only my 1310 that was looked at. He said on quote that the writing section does not count in the admissions process. surprised I said, "Really?" and he said "yes."

but regardless your right.

I think what he probably meant was that, although they do consider the writing section, they won't look at the SAT as an "out of 2400" test but rather an "out of 1600" test treating the writing section like an SAT II. That's pretty much in line with how NYU was admitting students before the new SAT, so it makes sense.

Hey, thank you.
So I go to a really good prep school, sends like 40 percent of students to ivys + stanford and such every year. Not many ap classes, very low grade inflation, no ranking.

So: gpa = 3.44, with upward trend, my jr gpa was a 3.6
Sats: 1470/2200 (740,730,730)
Sat ii: Math 1 - 690, US History - 710

Extras - generally solid. 3 sport varsity athlete, 2 club leader, paid (yeahh) internship at local nj hospital during the summer, and an editor of the newspaper are the highlights.

I should have solid recs.

Can you chance me for rd stern and rd cas. Thanks a lot.
