My Chances?

Hi, I'm new just joined this forum today, if I make any mistakes/errors please tell me.

I REALLY want to get into NC State, but my grades might not show it...

Major 1'st choice: Chemistry
Major 2'nd choice: Biochemistry

Weighted GPA: 3.92
Unweighted GPA: 3.00

Leadership Positions: Treasurer of Medical Club, Secretrary of Science Olympiad, Secretary and Treasurer of Math Club.

Volunteer: Hospital in Same Day Surgery and Gift Shop (4hours/week in summer, 2 hours/week in school year)

EC: Tennis-private instructor (not on school team though), Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do

Major Advantages: I took two chemistry courses at NC State (Chem 101/102 lab) and got A+ in both classes. Also planning on taking Chem 201/202 at NC State this spring while I'm still in high school. I attended NC State's Polymer Science and Chemical Engineering Camp.

I know my GPA isn't good, but I really want to get into NC State, its the only school that fits me. Thank You

What is your SAT score? Unless it's really low, you will probably have no trouble getting admitted. Get your applicaton in early. I think the deadline for early apps. is around the first of Nov.

I think you are in. I know kids who have gotten into NCSU with lower SAT's than yours. Good luck.

What major?

I know that I want to major in Biochemistry, which is under the College of Agriculture and Life Science (CALS). Chemistry major is under the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. Which college is easier to get into? If putting chemistry instead of biochem.,as my preferred major, means that I could get into NC State, I wouldn't mind that. I just want to get into the University itself. What should I put for major #1/#2 depending on the diff. colleges within NC State?

CALS is a bit easier, I think. Apply as soon as you can because NC State has rolling admission- applying in mid October, you'd probably get a decision in late November or early December.

I'm not sure about PAMS, but CALS has plenty of merit scholarships.

How about FYC? How is that compared to CALS and PAMS?

One of my friends was in FYC last year (and lived with FYC), and he absolutely hated it. They weren't as focused and tended to slack off...and this came from a HS slacker. He had a hard time switching out before the semester (year?) was done. There are also internal transfer requirements...it's much better to apply directly to your college if you know what you want to do. Your stats are good enough.

My friend just called the NC State admissions office today (ask questions about personal statement) and the lady who answered the phone (we're assuming is an admissions officer) said that they purely look at the academic record only to decide if you get in or not. I really hope this isn't true, but coming from an admissions officer..idk..

When my S applied to State, admissions sent a letter to say his SAT was missing (it really wasn't). When they called back to say they had found it, the admissions officer said "I can tell you right now that based on his grades and SAT, he has been admitted". So yeah, I would say that's mostly what they look at.

My S also says that he has not heard great things about FYC. Says he's heard it's hard to transfer over to the college you wish to be in.

Also, if you do end up at NCSU and live in the dorms, you should know that you don't have to be in FYC to live in the FYC dorms. My S lived in one last year and thought it was the best place to live (he was not in FYC).

Hi nguyen0824,
My S is a sophomore at NCSU. His high school stats were:
SAT 1400 (Math 660,Verbal740)
GPA 4.6w (don't know unweighted)
class rank 6 of 435
National Merit Commended
AP scholar with honor
played j.v.football for 2 years(team capt. soph. yr.),NHS, a few clubs (no leadership roles),active in church youth group (2 mission trips)
worked 25 hours/week at a grocery store

He was accepted to the College of Engineering (for Biological Engr.) but changed his major and is now in the College of Natural Resources.

S has friends at State with stats very similar to yours. One of them is in the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences majoring in Meteorology and I know for certain he made 1200 on the SAT. I think you have a good chance. Get your application in soon.

Good Luck nguyen...S had an old truck he was fixing up so worked all the time to buy parts and stuff. Installed the lift kit himself and added giant mud tires. He loves NCSU. You will too.
