Raleigh is really safe. The triangle area is generally considered one of the best places in the country to raise a family. With RBC center traffic nearby and suburbia surrounding, the area around NC State is pretty safe. Of course, you need to be careful, it's not as though it's in rural farmville. I just wouldn't consider it particularly unsafe. I'd worry more about Duke in Durham (and I wouldn't even worry too much about that since students don't have to leave campus or go into shady areas unless they go out looking for that stuff)
