Thank you, PackMom! Please tell me what you know about the housing form. We don't have it yet, as we just heard online yesterday. It should come in a few days. Is a deposit for housing attached to an agreement stating you will definitely be enrolling - and not refundable? She has to wait until April 1 to hear from one other school she would also really like to go to. Is housing really limited for freshman who applied RD? Is there a freshman dorm you would recommend? We sent a refundable deposit to another school for housing, just because it is refundable until May 1 and they do have housing that fills fast. Thanks.

hi tia3, Yes, you will get a packet of info. soon regarding housing and meal plans. As I recall (S is NCSU soph.) you had to send in $100. I don't remember if it was refundable because S was def. going to NCSU so we weren't concerned. I don't think there is any problem with housing for freshman, just that the quicker you get it in, the better the chance you get one of your choices.

The form (at least the one we filled out 2 years ago) tells you to list 3 choices of dorms (one each from East, Central and West campus). I called the housing office and told them that S was really only interested in Central campus and asked if he HAD to list choices for other areas and was told he could list 3 Central campus choices which he did. BTW, if you do the online form, the computer will not let you do this. S lived in Owen Hall. He liked Central campus living because it was well, centrally located! West Campus dorms are the closest to the dining hall. Don't know much about East campus dorms except that the Honors college housing is there and those dorms were recently renovated I think. The high rise dorms are suite-style. The older dorms like Tucker, Owen and the East Campus dorms are hall-style. Tucker and Owen dorms are the only all-freshman dorms. They advertise that they are the dorms for the First Year College program but you do not have to be in FYC program to live there. S and his roommate were not as were many others who lived there.

If you look under the University Housing section of State's webpage you can get a better picture of the dorms. Also find the big map of campus to give you an idea of where the dorms are located.

We are looking forward to our official envelope this coming week. We have visited a couple times and recall those dorms. Your reply is definitely helpful. I think it was so crowded when we had a chance to look in one - that's right, the line went on and on - we saw a room the first time and second visit gave up. It's a mixed feeling for us - we are thrilled, because in many ways, I loved the energy that the school has and Raleigh. But it's 7 and a half hours from home! The only other concern I have for her is that she will be one of the only "Yankees"... I believe it's something like 9% from out of state. We had such a good feeling there, though. Just wish we lived closer. I'm kinda used to her - if you know what I mean!

Raleigh does rock!! NC is a very welcoming state (I moved her from CALI, definitely a big difference) due to the large number of transplants in the Raleigh community and to the naturally friendly native North Carolinian nature

tia3, We are in NC but still 3 hours from Raleigh. S. loves Raleigh and NCSU so much that he rarely comes home. It was a hard adjustment at first but we have gotten used to it and are really glad that he's happy there. You will feel the same eventually. It just goes to show that being close to home does not guarantee that you will see a lot of your child once they leave for college. What state are you in? Don't worry. She won't be the only Yankee! Lots of North Carolinians are originally from "up North". S lives in in off campus apt. this year. One of his roommmates is from Chicago, the other 2 went to high school with S but their familes moved here from New York and Connecticut when the boys were in elementary school. One of his other best friends at State is a boy from Iowa. Also has a good friend in ROTC from NY. If your D really likes NCSU, I hope she'll give it a shot. Go Wolfpack!

We are from the Philadelphia area. I think we would have moved down there if my parents would have moved too. It's not just a warmer climate! I have a really good feeling about how she will decide, but we still will need to wait until April 1 for a few more choices. She's happy with everything except has that one concern about being an outsider from the Northeast among the girls. But the size of the school and what you both are saying is reassuring. As for me, I have to now buy one of those "letting go" books I have been avoiding.
