the admissions officers at UNC Chapel Hill told me they were going to start considering the writing score this next year. I don't know if State is the same... but I wouldn't worry too much about it. Surely a godd score can set you apart from other applicants but I don't think a lower writing score would necessarily "hurt" you... of course, that is my opinion only.
When I first applied to State, I only had a 1650 SAT (1150 cr/m) with a 500 writing score, 480 cr, and a 670 math... Then I retook the test twice and got an 1850 (1260 cr/m)... State did not see this score until I was already accepted and invited to apply to honors program and scholars program.. Basically, gpa, class rank, and course load are far more impotant than test scores.
