I'm a junior and 90% sure I want to go into engineering.

1. Do I have a chance with:
3.6 GPA W (might stay at 3.5, finals today)
SAT: 580M, 600R, and 530W (taking again oct.)
131/497 class rank

Some engineering specific courses Ive taken/taking at my HS:

Drafting I
Drafting II – Engineering
Drafting II – Architecture
PLTW – Intro to Engineering design
PLTW – Principles of engineering
PLTW – Civil and Architectural Engineering
PLTW – Digital Electronics

2. Most important:

Would I be better off applying for FYC at NC State, and then going into the engineering department?

IMO, getting in this way is better than not getting in at all.

You need to really increase your math score on the SAT. You have plenty of time to brush up on it between now and Oct. Get some review books and do practice tests.
Engineering is very math heavy. Have you taken Calc. and Physics in high school? Engineering majors have to take Calc 1,2,3 and also Phy.1 and 2 for engineering. It's tough.
I have heard that transferring from FYC is difficult. You should call the FYC office at NCSU and discuss it with them. Good luck to you.

I'm going to work on getting my math score up. Its my GPA I'm worried about (too late now though, it goes through junior yr, I'm done)


I'm taking Pre Calc. and Honors Physics next yr, and will be taking the SAT II math next march-ish. Through some of the engineering intro classes at my HS, I've been introduced to both physics(in depth), and some calculus.

it makes since that transferring in may be difficult, but from what I've researched, thats what FYC is for. (to figure out what you want to do and work your way toward it)

When you apply to NCSU you have to list a first choice major and a second choice. So you should obviously put engineering first and then FYC. The problem I would see is that FYC is supposedly for people who are undecided and you are not undecided. You know what you want. You need to be candid in your questions with the FYC people to make sure transferring to COE will be doable without throwing you way behind. Engineering has specific class requirements that start with the very first semester. I'm not sure if FYC will just let you take any schedule you chose. I think they may have certain requirements for the FYC program. Just ask a lot of questions, maybe even contact the engineering dept. and ask what your next best choice is for transferring is if you are not immediately accepted to COE.

ive been talking to a BUNCH of nc state engineering students through Myspace and a lot say they transfered through FYC and had no probllem with it. Its basically easier to get into, easier, and just basically the same as a first year engineerin student because there taking alot of basic classes also.

Sounds good then. A big plus of FYC is that you get to live in Tucker or Owen dorms. S lived in Owen (before it because exclusively FYC) in 2005/6 and loved it.

I have a couple months, so I have time to decide whether I should apply directly to engineering, or FYC. FYC sounds good and would clear up any doubts I have, but unless my senior yr changes my interests, I feel that applying to FYC would not be fair.(to others to be exact, since I do know what I want)

I think ill just do what packmom suggested, and first put down Engineering and secondly FYC, I don't know.

According to these stats, I would say that FYC would be a match and Engineering would be a reach.

Your GPA and SAT are weak. But your class rank is decent and will help you out.

You can apply to both. Select Engineering as your first choice and FYC as your second choice.

I got accepted to NCSU majoring in spanish etc. but about in Dec. I decided that I would like being a vet more, so I changed colleges from humanities and social sciences to agriculture and life sciences and am now going to major in animal sciences, so if you change your mind in your senior year, its ok, you can change that stuff, you just have to be pro-active and do things yourseelf to get them done, so if you apply for what you want now, and if you change your mind, change your college/major, its not that hard, all I needed to do was send an e-mail and I was changed

My S changed his major before starting NCSU also BUT he changed from Engineering to Natural Resources. He had been accepted to the College of Engineering initially. COE is much harder to be admitted than most other majors so the OP would prob. not be allowed to change into it from something else if his scores did not qualify him for admission to COE in the first place. He would probably need to do a couple of semesters taking the engineering math science track and then reapply to COE.
