Okay, got my scores and I was very pleased with some and the others... not so much. I did, however, get a 5 on my AP Calculus AB socre (amongst others) and I was wondering if I could choose not to take the credit. I know you might be wondering why I would not want to take the credit for a subject that I mastered completely, but I want to do really well in all my classes at state, espescially my mathes. I do not want the credit b/c i want to learn how NC state professors teach calc and tighten up my skills a little to better prepare for advanced mathes. Am I crazy for wanting to do this?

I really want to apply to med school and they look at math & science GPA in one catergory and overall GPA in another... I want to start off right. Do you think it will look bad to retake calc 1?

On the other hand, I wish NC State accepted 4s for English Lit and Comp b/c I never want to take English again!

Just sign up for Calc I or Calc II next semester. And you will not get credit for English Lit. They are very strict about it.

Our story...S1 took AP Calc. AB as a h.s junior, scored a 4 on the exam.
Took AP Stats as a senior because he didn't want to take Calc. BC.

Signed up to take Calc.1 as an NCSU fresh. thinking he might need a refresher since it had been awhile since Calc. AB and hoping it wuld not be too tough of a class since he did OK in AB.

WRONG....he got a foreign grad. student whose accent was so thick he could barely understand him and who started off teaching advanced trig. that S couldn't recall (took it in 9th grade). S failed the first two tests badly.

He went to see his advisor who told him to drop the class immediately as it would be silly to take a bad grade in a class that he already had AP credit for. So he dropped the class. Luckily he had signed up for enough hours to still qualify as full time student.

Spring semester of fresh. year, he decided to just go ahead and take Calc. 2 so he wouldn't be behind on his requirements. His teacher was a very good Phd. candidate (American). It was a difficult class but S attended the teachers office hours every week (sometimes more than once a week) for help with the classwork. The teacher was glad to help him. S came out with a B- and was very happy with it. Calc. 2 was the last of his math requirements since he had AP credit for Stats..hooray.

When S went to Orientaion before fresh. year, he had already been assigned to a Calc. 2 class because State had received his AP passing score ( your schedule already has you assigned to a Math. and Eng./Communications when you get there) So you prob. will be assigned to Calc. 2 also. S had no problem changing it to Calc. 1.

You said your son was assigned to a calc II class. Does this mean for the 1st semester freshmen can't choose the classes/profs they want?

momhippo, when S went to Orientation (July 2005) he saw his advisor to plan his schedule. He was already scheduled for Calc. 2 (due to AP test results) and a Communications class (because all the fresh. Eng. 101's were full and S needed the Communications class also). I think they go ahead and schedule all freshmen for a math and a eng. class in advance to make sure they are at least in two classes that they need. The kids can pick the rest. They can even drop the original assignment and change to a different class as my S did. I think having the math/eng. assigned is just to ensure that they all have a class in those two areas but if the kids want to change it, they can.

The drop/add class process on the computer is really easy. My S added a class and changed to a different section of another class from our home computer after he came home from orientation.
