I'm not certain exactly what you're asking for as far as "strength" of the program, but I'm a Zoology major, which is now under the same department, so I can offer some anecdotal info.
From what I have seen, the biology department is seriously on top of their game. The website is constantly updated, they have their own academic/advising student support group (BIOPals,) and the professors I've had for both of my introductory biology courses were super intelligent, friendly, and genuinely cared about their students. (Take Engell for 181 if you can.) In addition, there are a couple biology concentrations in the degree, such as Human Biology, Physiology & Neurobiology,
etc.

Since I'm pretty certain the biology degree covers all the pre-requisites for medical school, finishing the degree will definitely have you on the right path. Anita Flick, the head mentioned earlier, is actually the director of our HealthPAC program, which exists to advise pre-med, dental, optometry, etc. students.
