As a fellow socal'er and current NU student, I agree with Jamiecakes. You will probably share my sadness when you find out that flipflop weather is September-midoctober, then sporadic days starting in April and late March through June. Its not necessary to wait to come to school, just look for "warmest jacket" by like LL Bean or North Face or something. But definitely you want a hat/beanie, gloves, wool socks.
Boots/Wellingtons/Uggs with traction are very useful for a few weeks out of the year but aren't as important the rest of the year, whereas youll be using the previously mentioned stuff for most of it. And as a guy, I can't attest to how silk long underwear compares to the rest, but I just use my thermals that I had for backpacking and they are fine. I never really liked using scarves but you can use them for outfits if you want. Good luck!
