MT Certificate at Northwestern

Does anyone know about the quality of the musical theatre certificate program at Northwestern and/or the theatre culture there? Are there a lot of opportunities to perform in musicals and to get good training?

MT at Northwestern

Guitarheels,

I wrote this description with our impressions of Northwestern some time ago:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/...n#pos t792231

Don't know if things have changed since we looked at this program two years ago. That being said, we do know one girl very well who is a senior MT there (came in without audition through the Theater Dept) and she has been very happy and I think there are lots of performance opportunities,

Do a search with the word "Northwestern" as the keyword and limit the search to the Musical Theater forum and you will get several previous posts to look at. There is also a thread entitled NYU vs Northwestern that might be helpful.

My S goes to Northwestern. There is a new initiative called American
Musical Theatre Project which will develop and produce new musicals by leading artists in the field. The musicals will be used for training and educating NW students. You can go to NW's Web site and do a search. Good luck.

I have written about this before, also. I think theatermom wrote previously about getting into MT through the music side. From the theatre side, we were told that many audition and few are accepted into the MT certificate program. These auditions happen at the end of freshman and sophomore years. I think 15 are accepted from theatre and 15 from music. A student would enter the college not knowing if they would be able to get into MT after a year. Otherwise, we were very impressed with the university and the theatre dept.

I'm currently a freshman at NU, and so far I am very impressed by the quality of the work I have seen here from the MT kids. Admittance into the program is audition based and auditions are held at the end of freshman and sophomore years...I'm definitely auditioning in the spring! The only way to really get a feel for it is to visit...but from directors coming here to workshop new works to the excellent alumni connections that keep poppingp up, there is a wealth of opportunity here.
