Thanks for the nice words, typecastme. The AMTP staged reading was interesting -- I hope they develop it into a full production. It's amazing to watch everyone in the program grow and get better with each show. I'm looking forward to his next one, as Claude in Hair. That should be interesting... something new for him. By February he ought to be pretty hairy himself, since he's letting it grow. :-)

Thanks, S. It'll be fun to see how they all handle characters from our "hippie" era, which is so far removed from the way things are now, yet not really "history"... at least not to me. :-) I haven't seen the stage play of Hair, so I'm looking forward to it.

My question is for parents who have children who are actively engaged in all of the extracurriculars ... vocal groups, theater performances, etc. Our son is very talented but academics are an issue . (Even though we've stressed the i mportance of Junior year grades he is not doing as well as he should be. Does anyone know the chances of his getting into decent school for Musical Theater based on a low B-mid C average with SAT's approx 1250(Reading and Math)? Any suggestions for where to apply? He is looking at Pace, Ithaca, U of Arts, Hartt School -- we are frustrated parents who support his talents but can't take his tests for him! Looking for good advice from parents who have had to deal with this type of situation and where to apply! Thanks!

Looking back at this thread, I saw the post about HAIR. Interestingly enough, that was the first show I saw at Northwestern as a Freshman. I had never seen the show before and was really taken aback to see my future classmates fully nude right in front of my eyes. Definitely an eye opener for this naive farm boy. But a great memory still.

Maril -- This is the Northwestern University Thread, you may get even more responses if you post this question on the main MT board.

Those grades probabably would not get your S into Northwestern -- all students are admitted to Northwestern first academicall and then audition for the MT Certificate program once at the school... I think at the end of Freshman or Sophomore year.

As far as other schools go -- grades will carry a different weight in admissions decisions depending on the school. Some schools -- like University of Mighigan -- require all students to go through an academic screening before they are permitted to audition. Other schools weigh academics very little in the admissions decision. Other schools may weigh academics in the decision, but are at schools that are not as academically difficult to get into. Others do weigh them in the decision, but will allow all students who apply to the university to audition, and then see if they are competitive for admissions... I am sure that there are as many different policies and scenarios as there are schools!

I do not know the specifics of the programs you have listed above, sorry, but I am sure there are those who post on this board who do. You may also want to consider contacting the departments directly.

When you are putting together a list of schools it will be important to make sure you have at least one academic safety school that does not require an audition for admission to the theatre or MT program at which your S would be happy attending. This is the case for ALL students applying to MT college.... it is a highly competitive, and somewhat quirky process.

You may also want to look at 2-year conservatory programs such as AMDA or Circle in the Square. These programs are auditioned programs, but academics are not factored into the admission equation.

Maril, my D has a friend at school whose grades are really low. I know he got into Boco. He also got into Pace on academic probation. A lot of these MT programs also know that these extra extracurricular kids have to be mature enough to balance school and activities. Talent also plays a BIG part in getting into many of these schools even the top tier schools. Some schools have very high academic standards yet in the drama departments it weighs a whole lot less due to the nature of the major. Speak to different people. Don't let his grades stop him from applying/auditioning to his dream schools. There are some exceptions where grades mean more than others like UMich but many others that are more flexible.

Northwestern doesn't accept student directly into MT as freshman. It is a BA Theater school. After the first year, students can audition into the MT Certificate program.

mbagwell - I don't know how many MT students they accepted in the spring or how many seniors graduated, but I emailed my son to ask him and will let you know if I find out.

DisneyDirector - That is so funny that Hair was the first show you saw as a freshman, of all shows. :-) The actors had the choice of going nude (for like 30 seconds in the almost dark, as you saw), or wearing nude body suits. Since several of my friends went to see the show, we were very happy that M didn't have to make that decision... he was singing fully clothed in the background while all that was going on in front. Whew. :-)

Last spring 38 students were accepted into the MT Certificate Program. 9 students from the School of Music and 29 from the School of Communication. Sophs are able to audition again at the end of their soph year....last spring 6 were accepted, the remaining 32 from the freshman class. I don't know how many seniors graduated.

I have a 30 ACT and a 3.8 GPA. I go to an extremely rigorous and competetive private high school. What are my chanced of making it in? Does Northwestern go slightly easier on those who say they intend to get their degree in Theater?
