WiFi

There's WiFi in Norris Center right? Will "netgear" work? That's what's on my computer. If that won't work, how do I go about getting that remedied?

cerebralassassin, you'd be proud. I called NUIT and got this answered myself so disregard my previous post.

I'm proud that someone in my class at NU wasn't lazy and knew where to find the answer to their question, though your ignorance about technology was really endearing

"endearing?" Is that a euphemism for "embarrassing?" I admit I am not computer savvy.

I will share my questions and answers for the other other dysfunctionals in on this bulletin board who are too proud to come forward.

I called NUIT and was told that Norris does have WiFi and the connection depends on the kind of computer you have. I have a MacBook, which can connect, but my computer has to be reconfigured to make that connection possible.

I also asked how to get "sent" mail as part of my NU email account and they said to get a different account through Google, but it's not standard gmail, which I already have. It'sdifferent and it is through u.northwestern.edu.

It is ridiculous that we can't simply access our own "sent mail" through the NU accounts we were originally assigned. This would, for me, fit aptly and annoyingly under the category of "NU annoyances" referenced in some other thread.

I agree the old mail's lack of "sent" is really irritating, but you'll find the new system (umail) is MUCH better. Now I have to call them about my residence hall safety thing not showing up...

@arbiter: the residence hall safety thing stays within blackboard. It just allows you to open another file within the "safety course" folder, mine was called "completion certificate" and it was in bold and red.

@wintersilk: If you want sent mail, you can use outlook and save to your computer or use u.northwestern. I suggest doing both, or at least getting u.northwestern because NU is planning on changing the entire mail system to that, not to mention you're allowed to keep your mail after you graduate (i think it used to be just forwarding from the old emails). There were some technical problems before, also (webmail automatically erased address books, etc)

Bver, I know. I literally don't have access to the test, there is no "safety course" folder. Its frustrating because I'm very familiar with blackboard (had instructor access for a course I TA'd in HS).

I applaud those who gets answers for themselves, call me old-fashioned.

And about WebMail..you can set it to "vacation mode" (I forgot how, but mess around with the settings and you'll find it) and you can forward all e-mail to the NU address to an e-mail address of your choosing (i.e. the one you are using now). So if you have a GMail, Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, etc. that you like using, all incoming NU mail will automatically be sent there. Therefore, it'll be easier to keep track of sent mail, b/c you'll be using your traditional email program.

The only thing to be wary of is signing up for listservs on campus. If you sign your NU address onto a listserv, you can only email that listserv from the NU address. I'm not sure, but I've heard that GMail can send e-mail from the NU e-mail address.

Regarding e-mail forwarding and vacation mode, this site will allow you to redirect your Northwestern e-mails to another e-mail account:

http://www.it.northwestern.edu/accou...ons/index.html

My NU e-mail address redirects to a gmail account. (However, once you activate your u.northwestern.edu account, it automatically forwards NU e-mails to your u.northwestern.edu account and you can't change it for some reason)

If you want gmail to send e-mails using your NU account, simply go to settings and accounts and follow the instructions there.
